Students can complete their financial aid application at this year’s Super Saturday. The Nov. 11 event will take place in the Visitor’s Center on the Edinburg campus and in the Tower on the Brownsville campus.
“The Super Saturday event is mainly there to help students complete their financial aid applications, whether it be TASFA or FAFSA,” said Jael Perez, UTRGV associate director of Financial Aid. “However, it’s greater purpose is to encourage students about college going, and if they have any questions about the process, if they need assistance with their admissions application, or if they have any questions in general about college.”
Campus tours will be available from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on both campuses.
Super Saturday has been held each year since 2014.
“In the past, we’ve gotten probably anywhere from 200 to 500 students coming in,” Perez said.
The event is open to the public.
“This event is not just about helping UTRGV students, but any student that needs help to go to any college or university. They will get help at this event,” Perez said.
Students should bring their income information for 2016, which includes their W2 form and along with their and their parents’ tax returns. Students will also need to bring information for any benefits they receive, such as Social Security or food stamps.
Alexis Martinez, an English junior, said that an event like this would be helpful to students.
“It would be beneficial for a lot of people,” Martinez said. “Some people don’t even know how to sign up for [financial aid], or how to apply for it. I know it can be confusing, and you need a lot of paperwork for it, and to have people there to explain it to you, that would be very beneficial.”
She said she has been using financial aid since her freshman year.
Students do not need to register for the event.
At both locations, all students who attend will have a chance to win a $100 UTRGV scholarship.
“Students should take advantage,” Perez said. “The financial aid application process can sometimes be complicated, and this is the perfect time to get it done early so they can have plenty of time if any more documents are needed afterwards. Right now is the ideal time to get it done.”
