The hopeful cheers of a home crowd were not enough to prevent the UTRGV Women’s Basketball Team from falling 65-59 against Grand Canyon University during tonight’s game in the Fieldhouse.
This is the fourth-consecutive loss for Head Coach Larry Tidwell’s squad, leaving UTRGV with a 0-3 record in the Western Athletic Conference and an overall record of 10-8.
Power forward Quynne Huggins led the scoring for the home side with a total of 12 points and eight rebounds. Guard Amara Graham tallied 11 points and one rebound. Small forward Megan Johnson garnered eight points and five rebounds.
UTRGV started off strong in front of a crowd of 409 people. Vaquera forward Alicia McCray opened the scoring with a solid three-pointer in the first quarter. Even with the constant support of a solid defense, the Vaqueras were down 15-11 by the end of the first quarter.
The home side’s efforts were to no avail as GCU finished strong with a six-point lead in the last quarter.
Tidwell said the loss was in part due to several unfinished plays and opportunities.
“With the exception of the fourth quarter, it was an inability to make shots, inability to put the ball back in the hole,” he said.
Huggins said even though the team has suffered several consecutive losses, it is focusing on staying positive and the coming games.
“We are just trying to stay positive on and off the court,” she said. “It’s just important for us to keep our heads up and focus on the next game.”
On the visiting side, power forward Brie Mobley went to town with 18 total points and six rebounds.
GCU’s overall record is 8-9 and 2-1 in conference.
The women’s basketball team will hit the road to face off against Utah Valley University on Thursday.
