The National Collegiate Hispanic Honor Society held a ceremony March 23 to welcome 24 students who were selected to join Sigma Delta Pi due to their outstanding academic performance in Spanish courses.
The organization hosted the event in Robert C. Vackar College of Business and Entrepreneurship 110 on the Edinburg campus.
“Spanías Didagéi Proágomen” is Sigma Delta Pi’s motto, meaning, “Let’s go forth/continue forth under the teaching/guidance of the Spanish language.”
Distinguished professors and Liberal Arts Dean Walter Diaz, attended the ceremony.
The president of the organization, Alice Hernandez, and Secretary Alejandra Carrizalez were present.
Professor Maria Guadalupe Cortina congratulated the students and shared words of encouragement, along with a brief history of the organization. She told them her story about when she was a student and reminded them why it is an honor to be a member of the National Collegiate Hispanic Honor Society.
Sigma Delta Pi members organized the event.
Spanish senior Nora Ivette Macías was one of three students who was selected for the Jesús and Josefa Castellanos Scholarship.
“I was not expecting it, but I was very glad when I received the invitation and it motivates me to continue with my education,” Macías said.
Victor Farías, a Spanish senior with a teaching certification and communication studies with a minor in English as a second language, also received the scholarship.
“It opens many doors to keep finding opportunities. I see it as an opportunity and a reward for my efforts,” Farías said.
Berenice Ávila, Spanish senior with a teaching certification, received the scholarship as well.
“It is an honor to be a member of Sigma Delta Pi, said Laura Garza, who is a professor and Sigma Delta Pi adviser. “With a good GPA, once they are members, they have to be active within the organization, attending academic events that are organized by the organization that also have to do with the community.
