Texas Southmost College’s Student Life department will host its annual Bougainvillea Ball from 7 to 11 p.m. Saturday in the Jacob Brown Auditorium in Brownsville.
This year’s theme is “Under the Sea,” which was voted by the Campus Activities Board, composed of students to promote school spirit on campus and encourage students to participate in activities and events.
“Our Campus Activities Board [is] very involved on campus and pretty much the life of our campus,” said Virginia Sandoval, coordinator of student development. “The group of students get together, plan this months in advance to come up with a theme [and] they vote on it and the theme that won was ‘Under the Sea.’”
Noel Rangel, a social work sophomore at TSC and the CAB president, wants to make this year’s Bougainvillea an unforgettable experience.
“I’m excited for the music,” Rangel said. “I’m a really big dancer and I feel as if music is a universal language. You can dance with your best friend or a total stranger, and still have a great time.”
The ball is a traditional event for the college. Faculty and staff are also invited.
“It’s a tradition that’s been going on for years and years. Probably, 60-plus years,” Sandoval said.
The ball will have refreshments, provided by CAB, live music by Christina Valdez y Los Latinos, an assortment of games and the announcement of the king and queen of the dance.
The event is free and open to UTRGV students. Formal attire is required.
Sandoval praised the CAB for funding and creating decorations for the event.
“They’ve been working very hard on it. They’ve done everything from the center pieces, coordinating the menu [and] coordinating the elections,” she said. “It should be fun. It’s a night out. Everything is free, you know, you can bring a date and tell them you paid for everything, but, really, everything is free.”
Students can pick up tickets in the Lightner Center on the TSC campus.
