Throughout this academic year, The Rider will explore the student organizations at UTRGV. This is the first in a series. The Rider interviewed Raymundo Chapa, the president of the Exercise Science Club, for information.

What is the purpose of the Exercise Science Club? “We promote health awareness around the community. We play sports in our meetings to promote physical activity among the students and the university. We also offer scholarship opportunities. … We have a point system. At the end of every semester, the person with the most points gets a scholarship. [Members] can get points for volunteering [and] attending meetings. We also offer educational opportunities by attending conferences in the spring semester. … We present posters and speeches about trainings, such as supplements.”
What activities does the Exercise Science Club perform? “We volunteer in activities such as Cyclobia [in Brownsville], where they close down the streets and people can walk or bike on the streets. As I had mentioned, we play sports after the meetings. We also have socials at the end of the semesters … and volunteer in activities related to health.”
When and where do the Exercise Science Club’s general meetings take place? “We have [meetings] every Friday at 12 p.m. to 1 p.m … and then we play games from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. … We have them at Garza Gym, Room 200, in the Brownsville campus.”
What are the membership requirements? “There’s only a $5 membership fee requirement and anyone can join and any major is welcome to join the club.”
