Throughout this academic year, The Rider will explore the student organizations at UTRGV. This is the 10th in our series. The Rider interviewed Araceli Castillo, president of the American Criminal Justice Association, for information.
President: Araceli Castillo
Vice President: Itzel Abundis
Secretary: Eva Delgado
Treasurer: Evelyn Barajas
Sergeant at Arms: Jose Mata
Historian: Danya Martinez
Advisers: Lecturer II Marguerite DeWitt and Lecturer I Michael Sanchez
What is the purpose of the organization? “Prepare criminal justice students that are majoring [or] minoring in criminal justice. And, we try to do events related to criminal justice, specifically, either working with police departments or try to get with Border Patrol and just try to work on different projects. One of the local agencies we work with is SWAT. Usually, they’re very open to opening their obstacle course to us and so we can get, like, the physical training that we need.”
What are the requirements? “You do have to pay a $10 fee. … We do ask if everyone can have a 2.5 GPA or higher and we still accept members who are below a 2.5. They just have within that semester to pick it up, they’ll just be on probation. And, all you have to do is have a criminal justice major [or] minor.”
Meetings: 3-4 p.m. Thursdays in Sabal Hall 2.110 on the Brownsville campus.
