The UTRGV Men’s Basketball Team defeated Texas A&M University-Commerce 91-84 Tuesday night at the UTRGV Fieldhouse in Edinburg.
The first quarter got off to a quick start for Texas A&M-Commerce as senior guard William Rooks scored the first two pointer of the night for the Lions. The Vaqueros made a comeback and took a 16-4 lead.
UTRGV ended up winning the first half 45-32. The lead scorer for the first half was sophomore guard Greg Bowie.
By the second quarter, the Lions made a quick comeback and scored eight points to make the score 67-66 in favor of UTRGV.
Junior forward Lesley Varner scored three free throws which helped the Vaqueros increase their lead 73-72. The match ended in a 91-84 victory for UTRGV.
Head Coach Lew Hill said he is happy with the win, but the defense needs improvement.
“I thought we did a good job in the first half, second half we didn’t do as well moving the ball,” Hill said. “And, we didn’t do as well as defending, we gotta get better at that.”
The next match for the Vaqueros will be 7:30 p.m. Friday at the Bert Ogden Arena in Edinburg against Oklahoma University.
