The UTRGV Women’s Basketball Team fell to Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi 59-49 tonight at the UTRGV Fieldhouse in Edinburg.
The first quarter started fast for the Islanders as junior forward Alexes Bryant scored the first two points of the night for the team. The Vaqueras’ defense was unable to stop the Islanders, who took the lead by 6-2 at the 7:16 mark.
UTRGV made a comeback, with senior forward Krisynthia Sampson tying the score 13-13, assisted by senior forward Madison Northcutt. Nine seconds before the first quarter ended, sophomore guard Amara Graham made two free throws, giving the Vaqueras the lead, 15-13.
In the second quarter, a buzzer beater by the Islanders at the end of the first half kept the Vaqueras down 28-25.
The score remained close during the third quarter when UTRGV took the lead. Senior guard Idil Türk scored a three-pointer, giving the Vaqueras a 30-28 lead.
However, with less than five seconds left in the quarter, Islanders senior guard Tasia Foman made a free throw, putting TAMUCC ahead, 43-39.
The game finished 59-49 in favor of Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi.
UTRGV Head Coach Lane Lord said the game was helpful for the team to see errors and correct them in the following days.
“This is a good eye-opener for all of us, and I think we’ll grow from it and we’ll be better on Wednesday,” Lord said.
The Vaqueras will face the University of Texas at San Antonio in a non-conference game on at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Convocation Center in San Antonio.
