The UTRGV Women’s Volleyball Team won 3-1 at tonight’s game against Chicago State University at the Fieldhouse.
In the first set, the game remained constant for both UTRGV and Chicago State. With the Cougars pressuring UTRGV, the Vaqueras scored five consecutive points taking the 25-19 lead and finished the set 1-0.
During the second set, Chicago State came back leading by ten points, 23-13. The Vaqueras were unable to recover, which led to a victory for the Cougars in the second set.
UTRGV dominated the third set with outside hitter Ragni Steen Knudsen and middle blocker Alexandra Ecker, both seniors, helping the Vaqueras take the lead 10-7. Knudsen and Ecker blocked Chicago State’s attempt to put the ball over the net.
In the fourth and final set of the match, the Cougars inched closer to UTRGV, but the Vaqueras scored three successive points to get control of the set, 25-18, and finished the game 3-1.
UTRGV Head Coach Todd Lowery said the team fought through tonight’s game.
“I thought we got a good effort out of everybody,” Lowery said. “We ended with up switching rotations to give us a different look and I thought we played good at the end.”
The Vaqueras will play noon on Saturday against the University of Missouri-Kansas City at the Fieldhouse. UTRGV has the possibility of becoming Western Athletic Conference champions and obtaining the number one seed in the Western Athletic Tournament for the first time in program history with a win over UMKC.
