The UTRGV Women’s Basketball Team made the Utah Valley University Wolverines fight to the end, but came up short 57-55 tonight in the Fieldhouse.
The first quarter got off with a pair of layups by UTRGV senior forward Madison Northcutt and a 3-pointer by junior forward Megan Johnson. These seven points were the opening for a 10-4 lead in favor of the Vaqueras.
In the second quarter, sophomore guard Amara Graham, senior guard Nichele Hyman and Johnson scored 3-pointers to keep the Vaqueras ahead 27-16. The Wolverines got back to the game, scoring seven points close to the end of the first half and putting them one point behind the home team, 29-28.
UTRGV scored seven points in the third quarter to maintain the lead at 36-30, but Utah Valley edged into the lead in the last minutes of the quarter, with a score of 40-39.
The fourth quarter started off quickly with a 3-pointer by Johnson that helped the Vaqueras to tie the game at 43. With 2:07 left in the quarter, senior guard Idil Türk hit a 3-pointer, followed by Hyman with another 3-pointer, putting UTRGV in the lead at 55-53.
With a pair of free throws, the Wolverines tied the match and just before the buzzer, Utah Valley scored the final layup of the night.
UTRGV Head Coach Lane Lord talked about the tough game.
“We talked about this many times, but in conference play, it always comes down to just a couple of possessions,” Lord said. “We didn’t execute well, and they did.”
The next match for the Vaqueras will be at 7 p.m. Saturday against Seattle University in the UTRGV Fieldhouse.
