UTRGV 0 – New Mexico State University 3
Conference frontrunners and defending champions made their annual trip to Edinburg and swept the Vaqueros.
In the loss, Haley Durham became the program’s all-time block leader, increasing her career total to 326, surpassing Lisa Yandez’s mark of 323. The senior, who has played a major role all four years, now holds three programs records: block assists, hitting percentage and total blocks.
Men’s Soccer
UTRGV 0 – University of the Incarnate Word 1
The Vaqueros men’s team dropped a Sunday evening match in San Antonio 1-0 against Incarnate Word University. The lone goal came from O’Neal Moore in the 54 minute mark. The team will be back home Friday to host conference foes San Jose State University for the first ever meeting.
Women’s Soccer
Thursday: UTRGV 0 – UMKC 2
Kansas City scored two early goals that was enough to get passed the Vaqueros in Missouri. Erica Gonzalez was able to make seven saves in the loss.
Sunday: UTRGV 1 – Chicago State 0
Andreya Barrera’s third goal of the season also served as the game winner as UTRGV got a road WAC win for the first time this season. Erica Gonzalez only needed to make one save to earn her 3rd shutout of the season.
Their second conference win came as they beat Chicago State for the second time of the year. The win qualifies the Vaqueros for the WAC conference tournament in Bakersfield California.
Men’s Tennis
The Intercollegiate Tennis Association Regionals got moved from outdoors to indoors due to rain in Houston this weekend.
Elliot Johnstone and Yehonathan Kaufman suffered first round defeats.
Juan Cruz Soria advanced to round two with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Southern Methodists’ Alex Reinke
In the second round of play, Juan Cruz Soria fell to UT Longhorn John Mee, 7-6, 4-6, 10-6.
Koby Jansen, who received a first round bye, was eliminated in round two 6-4, 6-2 against Baylor’s Will Little.
Women’s Tennis
The women were also in Regional ITA action. The round of 128 opened the action at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center, home of Texas A&M University.
UTRGV’s Dominique Esparza, Natacha Minc and Reegan Greenwood all suffered defeats in straight sets. A win did come in the first round of singles action for the Vaqueros however, as freshman Dominique Ibarra earned a 6-3, 6-4 win over Sam Houston State’s Carrie Casey.
Ibarra’s exit came in the round of 64 against TCU’s Alexandra Zenovka 6-4, 6-2.
In doubles, first match losses were suffered by Minc and Greenwood, who fell 6-4 to a duo from Texas State University.
Ibarra and Esparza lost 6-0 to Solo Zinko and Emily Smith of Rice University.
Rain put a damper in the consolation round Saturday but not before Minc and Greenwood got their games in and were beaten.
