UPDATED AT 3:39 P.M. APRIL 2, 2019:
UTRGV Baseball hosted No. 16 Oklahoma State University Friday at the home-opener game with a crowd of 2,179 people. The Vaqueros fell 10-3 against the Cowboys and now stand 0-1 overall.
The Vaqueros scored the game’s first run in the bottom of the first inning on a two-out single by senior infielder Anthony Gomez.
UTRGV junior infielder Christian Sepulveda scored a run on a wild pitch during the bottom of the fourth inning, putting the score 3-2.
In the fifth inning and down 7-2, the Vaqueros loaded the bases with nobody out and scored on a double play by junior outfielder Coleman Grubbs to change the score 7-3.
Head Coach Derek Matlock discussed the team’s performance after the game.
“They did an unbelievable job throwing secondaries for strikes,” Matlock said. “They’re a great secondary pitching staff. They are going to throw a lot of sliders and breaking balls, you can tell they did that. So, they are gonna do it tomorrow and Sunday, too.”
UTRGV will play the second game of the series at 2 p.m. today at the UTRGV Baseball Stadium.
