UTRGV Baseball hosted the University of Portland on Friday at the UTRGV Baseball Stadium. The Vaqueros fell 6-4 in their first game of the Al Ogletree Classic.
The Pilots opened the score in the first inning with a homerun by senior infield Matt Kelly.
The Vaqueros scored their first run in the bottom of the second after freshmen first baseman Jacob Flores reached first base on an error and junior third baseman Christian Sepulveda ran home.
UTRGV junior center fielder Coleman Grubbs hit an infield-single that led junior shortstop Andy Atwood to score the second run for the Vaqueros, putting them up 2-1 in the bottom of the second.
In the bottom of the fourth, the Vaqueros increased their lead 3-1 after junior left-fielder Elijah Alexander hit a double to the right field that led senior second baseman Anthony Gomez to make a run.
In the top of the sixth inning, the Pilots earned a run putting the score 3-2. Atwood hit a single to the left field, followed by Gomez who scored the fourth run for UTRGV. The Vaqueros had the lead 4-2.
The Vaqueros allowed four runs in the top of the seventh inning that led the Pilots to overthrow them 6-4 reaching the victory.
UTRGV will play its second and third game of the Al Ogletree Classic against North Dakota State University and Portland at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m., respectively, today at the UTRGV Baseball Stadium.
