The UTRGV Student Government Association will host two separate town hall meetings this week to develop ideas for the look of the university’s mascot, the Vaquero.
Brownsville students can attend the town hall meeting at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Gran Salón. Students on the Edinburg campus can attend the meeting at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Student Union Theater.
“We know that the mascot is a vital part of the university,” said Cindy Mata-Vasquez, director of Student Activities. “We want to make sure all our students, especially future students, feel connected to this mascot.”
“We want them to feel that they do have a voice, and the committee will be listening to what they have to say,” Mata-Vasquez said.
Nicholas Hill, chair of the Campus Life and Community Affairs Standing Committee for Student Government on the Brownsville campus, said “the mascot should be whatever the students want it to be.”
The Mascot Development Committee was initially created to help decide what the official mascot should be.
“The committee is made up of faculty, staff, alumni and students,” Mata-Vasquez stated. “We’re hoping these town halls happening next week, at both campuses, will get students engaged and get the conversation started.”
The deadline for deciding the look of the university’s official mascot has been tentatively set by the committee for February 2016.
