Volleyball
Saturday:
UTRGV 1 – University of Missouri Kansas City 3
Bojana Mitrovic had another strong game for UTRGV with 20 Kills, 6 digs and 3 blocks. Haley Durham also pitched in with 10 Kills and 3 blocks.
Their efforts were not enough to take down Kansas City on the road however. Even loss set in the 1-3 defeat was by the same score of 21-25, proving that the match was close but the Vaqueros were unable to find wins. The team is back in action Thursday Oct. 5 at home when they host Grand Canyon University.
Men’s Golf
Defending conference champ Nicolas Platret led the way for UTRGV in Northern California during the Stockton Pacific Invitational. Platret finished 12th with a three-round total of 219. The next Vaquero in the standings was freshman Andres Gonzalez at 23rd place, only two strokes behind Platret.
Overall the five golfers finished in 12th place as a team out of the 16 competing schools. The WAC was well represented in the action. UTRGV finished in front of Grand Canyon and Cal State Bakersfield, while Utah Valley, who finished in 6th led WAC participants.
The tournament wraps up the fall season, the team will prepare for spring action that picks back up again Feb. 22
Cross Country
In Orem Utah the WAC Cross Country Tournament saw both the men’s and women’s team finish in 6th overall.
On the women’s side Teresa Sova finished 9th with her time 5-Kilometer time of 13:34.15. The top-10 finish in the tournament is the best for a women’s runner since joining the WAC.
Only one other runner finished for the women within the top 20. That runner was Jennifer Zapata whose time of 18:59.20 was good enough for 18th.
For the men it was senior Jose Juan Wells leading his team again. He finished 13th in the 8-Kilometer race with his time of 25:03.96. The rest of the team finished outside of the top-35.
Men’s Soccer
Friday: UTRGV 1 – San Jose State 3
WAC veterans San Jose State came to Edinburg Friday and started the scoring less than 30 minutes into the match with a tally from Rory Knibbs. Their next two goals came from Alex Alcaraz and a P.K. from Jonathan Colunga.
The Vaqueros spoiled San Jose’s attempt at a shutout in minute 78 when Fernando Arellano scored his first goal with helps from Archie Massen and Markus Björs
Sunday: UTRGV 3 – Cal State Bakersfield 0
The Vaqueros got back into the win column after a string of six defeats this afternoon when they shutout Cal State Bakersfield.
The first goal, that turned out to be the game-winner was scored by junior and Brownsville native Juanito Garcia. The rest of the scoring was saved until the final moments, first when Olli Tynkkynen scored his second goal of the year on a penalty kick. The third came from Raul Fierro, scoring his first career goal from an Archie Massen assist.
The shutout was a combined effort between Leo Castillo in half one, and Jorge Medina finished the job in the second half.
One more game remains on the season schedule, next Sunday against Houston Baptist University.
Women’s Soccer
Saturday: UTRGV 2 – New Mexico State 1
In the final match before the WAC tournament Coach Glad Bugariu’s squad showed their form with a victory in the home finale Halloween night.
Goals were scored by Marcela Ramirez and Kelzy Jepsen. Andreya Barrera picked up the lone assist of the evening. Erica Gonzalez tied her season-high in saves with seven and her bid to shutout was ruined with only eight minutes to play in the match.
The Vaqueros open up the WAC tournament Thursday at 6 P.M. against UMKC.
The quarterfinal match will be on the WAC digital network. Look out for story on the team going into the tournament in print this week.
