The UTRGV Women’s Basketball Team defeated Seattle University, 85-81, in overtime Thursday after trailing the opposing team for the majority of the game.
During the first half of the game, both teams were in a similar groove, with each team not straying too far from one another in points.
UTRGV graduate forward Desirea Buerge said the coaches told them to play with heart.
“It was rallying around each other, being a big team together,” Buerge said. “Another thing [the] coaches were saying, who has the most heart? So, we had to come out and show that we had more heart tonight than they did and not to lose on our home court.”
The Redhawks were dominating the Vaqueros for majority of the second half.
Toward the last few couple minutes of the fourth quarter, UTRGV shifted the momentum and began to catch up to Seattle U in points.
UTRGV redshirt junior guard Zhane Templeton tied the game sending it to overtime with a three-point buzzer beater.
When asked about what the plan was going into overtime Head Coach Lane Lord replied, “the biggest thing was to believe, they had to believe. We just try to pump ‘em up on the crowd and the crowd was into it.”
Once in overtime, UTRGV took the lead with many of the points being scored at the free-point line. This ultimately saved the Vaqueros on the scoreboard.
The UTRGV Women’s Basketball Team is now 3-1 in the Western Athletic Conference. The team will go one on one against Utah Valley University at 1 p.m. Saturday in the UTRGV Fieldhouse in Edinburg.
