Almost a year after Hidalgo County reported its first COVID-19 death on April 7, 2020, the county has recorded 2,768 total deaths as of Thursday, according to a news release.
On Thursday morning, Hidalgo County reported two new COVID-19 deaths, according to the news release. Daily COVID-19 deaths have been declining and have been in the single-digit range since March 8.
Hidalgo County also reported 172 positive cases, which brings the total of active cases to 1,677 and 85,141 total cases.
One hundred two individuals are in Hidalgo County hospitals, with 40 in intensive care units as of Thursday.
In other COVID-19 news, Hidalgo County’s population percentage with one dose of a vaccine is 37.59%, according to the Texas Department of State Health Services. The percentage of the population in Hidalgo County that is fully vaccinated is 20.18%.
As of Wednesday, Hidalgo County ranked third in vaccinations among the four Rio Grande Valley counties, according to DSHS.
Starr County led with 54.57% of its population having at least one dose of the vaccine and 32.35% being fully vaccinated.
Cameron County was second with 40.35% of its population vaccinated with one dose and 22.53% being fully vaccinated.
Willacy County was fourth with 36.44% of the population having received at least one dose, slightly behind Hidalgo County. The percentage of the population fully vaccinated in Willacy County is 15.45%.
A total of 11,458,607 doses of vaccines have been administered in Texas, according to DSHS. A total of 7,595,073 people have been vaccinated with one dose in the state and 4,154,353 have been fully vaccinated with either two doses of the Pfizer or Moderna or one dose of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine.
Texas announced Monday that everyone age 16 and older is now eligible to receive a COVID-19 vaccine.
