The following are among the incidents reported to University Police between Sept. 23 and 28.
Sept. 23
12:04 p.m.: A staff member reported losing a university portable radio sometime between April 2018 and May 2021 on either the Edinburg or Brownsville campuses.
6:12 p.m.: A student reported that while boarding a charter bus at the Main Building on the Brownsville campus, she saw a man she had filed a report against with the Brownsville Police Department in 2019 who boarded the same bus. An officer obtained the man’s identification and confirmed he was a current student. There was no contact between the students during the ride from Brownsville to the Edinburg campus. She wanted to document the incident and was provided information on the available services at UTRGV.
Sept. 24
11:34 a.m.: Officers made contact with a faculty member in reference to a package that had been delivered to the university on the Edinburg campus and was addressed to him. He did not want the package because he did not know where it originated from. Officers took possession of the package and the case is under investigation.
4:10 p.m.: An officer responded to the Village Apartments on the Edinburg campus in reference to a housing coordinator reporting the odor of marijuana coming from one of the rooms. The student resident was not present in the apartment when the coordinator conducted a health and safety check at the residence. The coordinator reported finding a tin can with rolled cigarettes. The case is under investigation.
Sept. 25
7:41 p.m.: An officer on patrol observed a vehicle accident near the Community Engagement and Student Success building on the Edinburg campus. The officer assisted at the scene until Edinburg Police Department officers arrived to investigate the accident.
9:56 p.m.: An officer responded to the Casa Bella Apartments on the Brownsville campus in reference to an alcohol violation called in by a resident assistant. Upon arrival, officers made contact with five individuals who were minors in the apartment. A visitor, who is not affiliated with UTRGV, was issued a criminal trespass warning. The incident will be handled administratively through Student Rights and Responsibilities. The alcoholic beverages were photographed and disposed of on scene.
Sept. 26
4:47 p.m.: An officer responded to Lot E-19 on the Edinburg campus in regard to a traffic collision between two vehicles. No injuries were reported.
Sept. 27
10:21 a.m.: A staff member reported damage to the exterior wooden fence at the Casa Bella Apartments on the Brownsville campus. The officer observed that the part of the fence that was reported to be damaged was deteriorated.
2:35 p.m.: A staff member reported losing a university-issued key at an off-campus location in Edinburg. A report was generated for documentation purposes.
3:48 p.m.: A staff member reported losing a university-issued key on the Edinburg campus in September 2019. A report was generated for documentation purposes.
10:29 p.m.: An officer stopped a vehicle for a traffic violation on International Boulevard in Brownsville. An investigation revealed the out-of-state license plates the vehicle was displaying had not been issued to the vehicle. The license plates were recovered by the officer and the operator was issued a citation for the violation.
Sept. 28
10:12 a.m.: A student struck the exit gate at the Casa Bella Apartments on the Brownsville campus while exiting, causing it to go off the sliding rail. No injuries were reported.
11:38 a.m.: A student reported another student had taken her spiral notebook after she had forgotten it in class on Sept. 27. She reported she had not been able to retrieve her notebook from the student and requested assistance. An officer made contact with the student, who returned the notebook to the police department without incident.
11:37 a.m.: A student reported there were several posts on a social media platform about him that he found to be offensive. A report was generated for documentation purposes only.
6:53 p.m.: A student reported that while at the University Library on the Edinburg campus on Sept. 14, a student had made her feel uncomfortable when he touched her thigh without her consent. The incident will be referred to Students Rights and Responsibilities for further review.
8:32 p.m.: UTRGV Police Communications observed in Brownsville a non-affiliated individual on camera jump the U.S. border fence behind the UTRGV Facilities building. An officer and U.S. Border Patrol agents responded to the area to make contact with the man. A Border Patrol agent subsequently took custody of the Mexican national without incident.
