The Student Government Association has voted to approve changes to the First Year Internship Program Guidelines, including a lower GPA requirement.
The SGA proposed a change in the FYI Program guidelines at its previous senate meeting Feb. 22 but, after being reviewed by the Internal Affairs Committee, more changes were proposed.
During its March 8 meeting, the senate approved changes to the program qualifications as follows:
–Instead of maintaining a minimum GPA of at least 2.5 throughout the school year, students must have and maintain good academic standing as per the university guidelines. To be in good academic standing, a student must earn a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher over the course of their undergraduate career. This requirement will still be waived for students who do not have a GPA in the university and are awaiting grades.
–Students must be enrolled in a minimum of six credit hours per semester. Previously, the requirement was 12 credit hours per semester.
Matthew Cantu, senator for the Robert C. Vackar College of Business and Entrepreneurship, made the motion for a direct vote on the changes.
Under new business, the senate approved the following appointments:
–Marketing freshman Elijah Gonzalez, as senator-at-large for Edinburg
–Biomedical science junior Julianna Castillo, as senator for the College of Health Professions
–Biology senior Shiza Khan, as senator of the College of Sciences
–Marketing freshman Melanie Gutierrez, as associate justice
The appointment of Danish Kadir for senator of the Graduate College was tabled since he was absent from the senate meeting.
The next SGA meeting is scheduled to take place at 6 p.m. Tuesday on the Brownsville campus.
