The UTRGV Women’s Tennis Team defeated Lamar University 4-3 last Saturday at the Orville I. Cox Tennis Center on the Edinburg campus with its season-best crowd of over 100 people. The Vaqueras secured a 1-0 advantage against its Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Southwest Division opponent, the Cardinals, after winning 2-out-of-3 doubles matches.
Freshmen duo Marjorie Souza and Barbara Martinez took the No. 1 match 6-4 and the No. 2 duo of senior Katarina Sasaroga and sophomore Isabelle Bahr rallied from 0-3 to win 7-6.
Victories from sophomore Stefanie Wilske, Marjorie, and Bahr secured the win for UTRGV 4-3.
After the match, head coach West Nott said he was proud of his team.
“Everything we talked about all year, finally came through right at the most important moment and we wanted to secure our status going into the WAC tournament,” Nott said. “Hopefully, this improves our seedingand gives us a good look at some different opponents here.”
UTRGV will face off against Seattle University at the WAC Tournament at 3 p.m. Friday in Beaumont.
