The following are among the incidents reported to University Police between Dec. 15 and Jan. 5
Dec. 15
9:52 a.m.: A Cameron County sheriff’s deputy advised he was looking for a non-affiliated man who had two active arrest warrants and might be attending Commencement on the Brownsville campus. University Police and the deputy checked the area but did not locate the man. It was later reported that the man was arrested off campus.
1:44 p.m.: A contracted worker reported having accidentally opened a gas line while working on the plumbing in the Robert C. Vackar College of Business and Entrepreneurship Building on the Edinburg campus. Environmental Health, Safety & Risk Management arrived on the scene, confirmed the gas line was shut off properly and deemed the building safe for reentry.
Dec. 16
4:56 p.m.: An officer responded to the lobby of the police department regarding a student who was not feeling well. After further investigation, the officer initiated an emergency mental health detention on her findings and requested a mental health screener. The screener arrived at the scene and interviewed the student, who stated she had taken a narcotic earlier. The student requested to be transported to the hospital.
8:14 p.m.: An officer conducted a traffic stop for a violation in Lot E-33 on the Edinburg campus. The officer found the driver had two active arrest warrants from the Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office. The subject was arrested on warrants and transported to the Hidalgo County Detention Center. The man’s vehicle was turned over to a colleague and taken to his residence.
Dec. 19
2:15 p.m.: A student reported that an unknown individual created an Instagram account using his personal information without permission and with the intent to cause harm. The case is under investigation.
Dec. 20
7:25 a.m.: An officer observed two men via closed-circuit TV camera crossing over the U.S. borders near the Interdisciplinary Academic Building on the Brownsville campus. The officer and a U.S. Border Patrol agent responded to the location. The agent took custody of one male juvenile but the officers did not locate the second man.
Dec. 23
1:24 p.m.: An officer observed three men through closed-circuit TV cameras jumping over the U.S. border fence near the Interdisciplinary Academic Building on the Brownville campus. The officer and U.S. Border Patrol responded to the location and conducted a search but did not locate the three men.
Dec. 26
2:29 p.m.: An officer responded to a two-vehicle collision at the intersection of Schunior Street and Sugar Road in Edinburg. No injuries were reported. The Edinburg Police Department arrived and took over the scene.
Dec. 27
8:23 a.m.: An officer on foot patrol observed a water leak in the ceiling of a wing of the Biomedical Research & Health Building on the Brownsville campus. University Police notified the Facilities and Environmental Health, Safety & Risk Management department for repairs.
Dec. 28
7:01 a.m.: An officer on the Brownsville campus observed three non-affiliated men running toward the Interdisciplinary Academic Building as U.S. Border Patrol agents attempted to apprehend them. The agents took custody of two adult men and the third man ran south toward Mexico.
2:21 p.m.: An officer assisted Edinburg Police in conducting a welfare check at Heritage Hall regarding a non-affiliated man who claimed to be visiting his sister at the location. After further investigation, officers discovered that the man’s sister did not live there. Officers searched the area but did not locate the man.
Dec. 30
2 a.m.: An officer assisted U.S. Border Patrol in the search for three individuals who had crossed the border fence by Lot B-1 on the Brownsville campus. The officers did not locate the individuals.
11:16 a.m.: An officer reported an active fire alarm at the Clinical Education Building in Harlingen. The Harlingen Fire Department arrived, checked the building and deemed it safe for reentry.
12:53 p.m.: Officers responded to a power outage in Health Affairs Building West on the Edinburg campus. Upon arrival, an officer found that the backup generator had been activated. University Police contacted Environmental Health, Safety & Risk Management, which advised someone would arrive to assess the situation.
Dec. 31
12:36 p.m.: An officer responded to two student residents who were having a verbal disagreement in the Casa Bella apartments on the Brownsville campus. The officer determined no crime occurred and the resident assistant advised they would set up a meeting between both students to find a resolution.
3:46 p.m.: University Police observed a man on closed-circuit TV cameras crossing over the border fence in Lot B-1 on the Brownsville campus. The Border Patrol later reported the man had been apprehended off campus.
Jan. 1
3:17 a.m.: An officer spoke with two men who were observed in Lot B-1 on the Brownsville campus. After further investigation, the officer determined the men had entered the United States illegally. U.S. Border Patrol arrived and took custody of the two men, who were determined to be undocumented.
Jan. 2
9:15 a.m.: A student reported receiving a text message with a concerning comment from an unknown individual. The case is under investigation.
Jan. 4
9:18 a.m.: An employee on the Edinburg campus reported receiving concerning emails and phone calls from a woman who is enrolled in a certification program. After further investigation, University Police determined no crime occurred.
Jan. 5
10:35 a.m.: An employee reported finding spray paint markings on the Clinical Education Building in Harlingen. The case is under investigation.
Jan. 8
8:19 a.m.: An employee reported that two computer adapters had been stolen from an unlocked office in the Biomedical Research & Health Building on the Brownsville campus. The case is under investigation.
