The following are among the incidents reported to University Police between Jan. 10 and Jan. 21.
Jan. 10
4:01 p.m.: A student reported a previous suspicious encounter with a former student in the Visual Arts Building on the Edinburg campus. After further investigation, it was deemed no crime occurred.
Jan. 13
3:59 p.m.: A University Police officer responded regarding an active fire alarm in Troxel Hall on the Edinburg campus. The smoke detector was activated due to burnt popcorn. Environment Health, Safety & Risk Management deemed the building safe for reentry.
Jan. 14
10:53 a.m.: A University Police officer was dispatched regarding a writing found in the men’s bathroom in the Science Building on the Edinburg campus. The case is under investigation.
9:42 p.m.: A student reported smoke in her room in Casa Bella on the Brownsville campus. After further investigation, no smoke was located and the building was deemed safe.
Jan. 15
8:37 a.m.: An officer was dispatched in reference to an employee finding a door propped open in the eBridge Center for Business and Commercialization, located at 1304 E. Adams St. in Brownsville. After further investigation, officers determined no crime had been committed.
6 p.m. A student reported losing his phone in the Interdisciplinary Engineering & Academic Building on the Edinburg campus. An employee later found it and turned it over to the police department.
Jan. 16
6:22 a.m. A University Police officer responded to a vehicle following a non-affiliated woman in Lot E-36 on the Edinburg campus. After further investigation, officers determined no crime occurred, and the driver was a relative of the woman.
Jan. 18
3:51 p.m. University Police and the Brownsville Fire Department responded to a fire alarm in the library on the Brownsville campus. The fire alarm was triggered by water pressure in the sprinkler system. It was noted that the first-floor lights were not working due to two damaged electrical fuses. As a precaution, the building remained without power and under fire watch until Jan. 20.
Jan. 19
11:27 p.m. An officer conducted a traffic stop that concluded in Lot E-32 on the Edinburg campus. Upon contacting the driver, the officer discovered that he was in possession of drug paraphernalia. The driver was issued a citation after the contraband was collected as evidence and was subsequently released at the scene. A report documenting the criminal offense was completed.
Jan. 20
7:29 a.m. An officer was dispatched after a non-affiliated contractor reported a burglary in the UTRGV Vackar Football Stadium in Edinburg. The contractor reported that unknown individuals forced their way into a construction trailer and stole several items. The case is under investigation.
