University of Texas Rio Grande Valley science students will have more resources and space by March 2018 as the construction of the addition to the Science Building continues.
Work crews from Vaughn Construction have had several delays due to weather-related issues, which has pushed back the deadline of completion.
Marta Salinas-Hovar, associate vice president of UTRGV Facilities Planning & Operations, said construction of the facility is funded by the Permanent University Fund. The PUF is a public endowment contributing to the support of eligible institutions of the University of Texas System and the Texas A&M University System, according to the UT System website.
The Science Building addition will be 115,000 square feet and will hold classrooms, labs, faculty and researcher offices, and state-of-the-art research equipment, which will expand the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) research program, Salinas-Hovar said.
Biology junior Lekhuan Tran is taking classes in the current Science Building and said she does not know the purpose of the construction going on.
“I wondered what all the workers are doing here, but I hope it’s the best for our university,” she said.
As time goes on, more students will see the progress of the building and be more aware of its presence.
