The UTRGV Women’s Soccer Team took the win against Southern Utah University with a final score of 1-0 after a close game Friday night.
It only took minutes for the home team to lead the attack taking mid range shots from outside the box, putting the visiting team under pressure.
Fifteen minutes into the second half, senior forward Sarah Bonney scored from a corner kick for the Vaqueras.
Bonney said she was happy to see so many students and fans come out to support the team.
“I feel super excited about our win today,” she said. “It’s always great as a player to see a lot of people in the stand supporting you, and I was really excited. I have friends in the Herd, so I was so happy to share my name and all, and it feels really good to have home support like that. I hope they come every time.”
Head Coach Glad Bugariu said the team is happy with the win after losing their first game.
“For us, it’s important to win, you know, we wanted to have a good rebound from our first game when we lost to [University of] Miami,” said Bugariu.
Bugarui said the goal was “a moment of good fortune and [Bonney] found it.”
Southern Utah University Head Coach Fred Thompson said it was a competitive game.
“I think both teams did well, you know, we’re pretty evenly matched teams and I thought it was a good battle today,” Thompson said. “I would’ve preferred a different result but I thought it was a pretty good game.”
The Vaqueras next home game is scheduled for 7 p.m. Sept. 15 against Texas A&M Corpus Christi at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex.
