Top world musicians, flamboyant performances and exquisite music are the main components of the 2019-2020 Patron of the Arts Distinguished Artist Series. UTRGV School of Music will bring musicians from around the world.
From Niño De Pura, one of Spain’s famous leading guitarists, to exemplar American pianist, Alex McDonald, the Rio Grande Valley community has an opportunity to enhance their lives with the arts.
“They are all really progressive composers, they try to mix the sound of jazz, sound of folk music to create music that is exciting,” said Kurt Martinez, director of the UTRGV School of Music. “The concert series we have here in the School of Music is crucial for the community to come and hear great art.”
Spanish guitarist Niño de Pura, Croatian pianist Javor Bračić and Colombian group Trio Picaporte will be part of the event. To conclude the experience, Indian-American Sandeep Das and American Mike Block will present a mix of vocals, Indian drums, cello and other instruments.
“I like to see that there’s an initiative to expose students to musicians from around the world and even some Latin American musicians, considering our school has a lot of Latin American students,” said Sandra Barbara, a music education senior at UTRGV. “The more we know about people and the more we know about the different cultures that are around us the better we can understand different people.”
These prodigious musicians have been a great way to inspire students to continue with their studies. It is no wonder why they are excited about the upcoming concerts. The Distinguished Artist Series has helped music students to exceed their music capacities
by implementing a mixture of musical ambiance.
Samuel Pasqualetto, double bass player and UTRGV graduate student said, “These top-level artists can provide good music for the population of the Valley, so whoever attends can develop their taste in music. It’s always good to see a good artist perform because we can incorporate what they do to our practice, our performance.”
With six world-renowned music figures, the 2019-2020 Patron of the Arts Distinguished Artist Series will take place on the Edinburg and Brownsville campuses.
