The Student Government Association has drafted a resolution calling on the university’s leaders to oppose President Trump’s rescindment of DACA and Congress to create legislation to protect the livelihood and civil liberties of those affected by the act.
The Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals was rescinded Sept. 5 by President Trump. The act provides about 800,000 young people who were brought to the United States as children with temporary protection from deportation if they can demonstrate that they meet several criteria, according to whitehouse.gov.
Members of the SGA did not vote on the resolution during last Friday’s meeting because of needed revisions. The resolution was drafted by Edinburg Senators at Large Carlo Flores and Denisce Palacios, Brownsville College of Liberal Arts Senator Ivan Morado and sponsored by Sergeant at Arms Lauryn Brough.
Plans for its approval have yet to be determined.
In other SGA news, Brownsville Senator at Large Gabriela Azuara told the senate that studios are being locked when art students step away before the 10 p.m. closing time. Azuara said it’s unfair to the students who are trying to do their work late at night.
“Last SGA term, it was something SGA was working on … to get them unlocked for these students to be able to complete their senior projects,” Azuara said. “And to hear that it’s still happening, it’s very disappointing. We’re hoping to reach out to other departments like campus PD and even faculty to see what is the issue.”
Lunch with the Dean has been scheduled noon to 1:30 p.m. Oct. 7 in El Gran Salón at the Brownsville campus and at the same time Oct. 19 in the University Ballroom at the Edinburg campus. The event is an opportunity for students to ask their respective deans questions about their college.
Plans for approving the Ace the Test bill have been made. After students take the Ace the Test survey, SGA gives students testing materials, such as four Scantrons, four blue books or a combination of both.
The next SGA meeting will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Friday in Biomedical Research and Health Building 1.222 on the Brownsville campus and in Academic Services Building 1.106 on the Edinburg campus.
