UTRGV swung and lost 5-4 against Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi in a home game Tuesday, leaving the Vaqueros with an overall record of 4-1.
The Vaqueros did not score until infielder Matthew Mendoza hit a home run and helped secure the first three runs for the orange team in the sixth inning.
Corpus Christi scored consistently throughout the game, tallying one run in the first inning, two in the third and two in the sixth, including home run by Andriud Martinez.
UTRGV infielder Ivan Estrella hit a home run, giving the Vaqueros four runs on the scoreboard to end the eighth inning.
With neither team scoring in the final inning, UTRGV posted its first loss of the season.
Last weekend, the UTRGV Baseball Team swept Central Michigan University and Stephen F. Austin University in the Al Ogletree Classic.
UTRGV defeated Central Michigan University 7-6 last Friday and 6-3 Saturday. Stephen F. Austin University fell 6-4 to the Vaqueros last Saturday and 11-5 Sunday.
Next on the Vaqueros’ home plate is a face-off against the University of Illinois-Chicago Flames at 7 p.m. Friday.
