Eco Rio

The Environmental Studies Symposium will host presentations on topics such as climate change, eco-friendly lifestyles and habitat restoration from 3 to 7 p.m. in the University Ballroom on the Edinburg campus and at the same time Tuesday in Salón Cassia on the Brownsville campus.

Billiards Tournament

A billiards tournament will take place at 12:30 p.m. in the Game Room on the Brownsville campus and at the same time Wednesday in the Game Room on the Edinburg campus. Students can play for free and have a chance to earn VBucks. For more information, email studentunion@utrgv.edu or call 665-7989.

Service Fair

Students can learn about service opportunities and information on Service Saturdays from 12:30 to 1:20 p.m. in the Main Courtyard on the Brownsville campus. For more information, call 882-5111. 

Wednesday

National Nachos Day

The Student Union will give out free nachos starting at 12:15 p.m. in the Game Room on the Brownsville campus.

Wellness Wednesday

Students can get free wellness checks such as body mass index, blood pressure and glucose levels and body fat percentage from noon to 2 p.m. in the Texas Southmost College Recreation Center in Brownsville.

Thursday

Super Smash Bros. Tournament

The Student Union will host a Super Smash Bros. tournament at 12:30 p.m. in the Game Room on the Brownsville campus. Finalists will be awarded VBucks. For more information, email studentunion@utrgv.edu or call 665-7898.

Women’s Basketball

The UTRGV Women’s Basketball Team will face off against Texas Southern University at 7 p.m. in the Fieldhouse on the Edinburg campus. Admission is free to all UTRGV students with a valid ID.

Public Heritage Lecture

Frank G. Perez, an associate professor of communication at the University of Texas El Paso, will present a lecture titled “Juan de Oñate Controversy in El Paso: Fantasy Heritage, Hegemony and Cultural Representation in a West Texas Town” at 3:30 p.m. in Liberal Arts Building North 1.101 on the Edinburg campus. The lecture is part of UTRGV’s Public Heritage Series.

One-on-One

Texas Rising will host a One-on-One conversation with Texas Senate District 27 Democratic Primary candidate Sara Stapleton-Barrera from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Nov. 12 in the Student Union Palmetto Room on the Edinburg campus and at the same time Nov. 14 on the Brownsville campus (location to be announced). A One-on-One with Ruben Cortez, who is also seeking election to the District 27 seat in next spring’s Democratic Primary, will take place from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Nov. 16 on the Edinburg campus and at the same time Nov. 19 on the Brownsville campus. Locations are to be announced.

The MOLLY Prize

The MOLLY Prize for Best Student Journalism is a new annual award for student reporting in Texas. Entries may be print, online, in video or audio on the basis of either a single piece or a series of up to four related articles or columns. The winner will receive one of two $500 prizes from the Texas Democracy Foundation and the Texas Observer. Deadline for submission is Feb. 1. All MOLLY student journalism contest participants will also be eligible to take part in a mentoring program in either Houston, Dallas/Fort Worth, San Antonio, Austin or Rio Grande Valley areas. As part of the program, student journalists will be paired with working journalists for a networking opportunity in small group settings.
