Athlete of the week: Agustin Salazar

Mass communication freshman Agustin Salazar plays for the UTRGV Men’s Tennis Team. Salazar graduated from McAllen Memorial High School. He recently won the Singles H Draw Championship 3-0 at the University of Texas at San Antonio Jauer Roadrunner Invitational.

Q: What do you do for fun outside of tennis?

A: “Outside of tennis, I like to watch tennis or watch Formula 1 [racing] or play video games. Either that or spend time with friends.”

Q: What movies or shows do you like?

A: “I love Marvel movies. ‘Star Wars’ movies, anything Marvel or ‘Star Wars’ related, I really like. I like the Formula 1 TV show, the Netflix series [‘Formula 1: Drive to Survive’].” 

Q: What kind of music do you like? 

A: “Anything in Spanish, reggaeton, corridos, antiguas. I really like ‘Experimento,’Mi Niña,’ ‘No Sigue Modas,’ ‘Algo Me Gusta de Ti,’ ‘Calma.’”

Q: Who is one of your role models?

A: “Either Roger Federer or [race car drivers] Sergio Pérez or Carlos Sainz Jr.”

Q: What has been your proudest moment?

A: “Tenniswise, there’s two: getting third in state when I was in high school and, now with UTRGV, winning the UTSA tournament. In high school, it was the State Tennis Tournament UIL 5A. Winning the UTSA tournament with UTRGV, it’s called Roadrunner Invitational, that was like three weeks ago.”

Q: Do you have any fun facts about yourself?

A: “Even though I’m an athlete, I don’t eat that good. I eat a lot of junk, but I burn it off right away. I really, really enjoy cars, like, anything about cars, like racing. I started playing tennis when I was 4. I give tennis lessons.”
