This week’s athlete of the week is Ahren Freeman. He is a sociology senior forward who plays for the UTRGV Men’s Basketball Team. He is playing his second season in a Vaqueros uniform.
Q: Can you tell us a fun fact about yourself?
A: “A fun fact about myself is that I love dogs. I’m a very big dog person. No matter what dog it is.”
Q: Who or what got you started in basketball?
A: “I would say growing up watching Dwayne Wade. That’s my favorite player so he really inspired me.”
Q: Who’s been your biggest inspiration or role model?
A: “Outside of basketball, it’s probably my dad, just because of everything he’s taught me throughout the years, you know what I’m saying. [He] molded me into the man I am today.”
Q: What kind of music do you like to listen to?
A: “I’m a very big hip-hop guy. I mix some R&B in there sometimes, you know, and when my girl’s around a little country.”
Q: Any shows or movies you like to watch?
A: “Right now, I’m watching ‘Suits.’ I’m on season three of that [and] I’m really hooked on that right now. And then, one of my favorite movies is probably ‘[Fast Five]’ when they were in Rio, in Brazil.”
Q: What is your biggest motivation?
A: “Basketball is just really pushing me right now. [It is] taking me down a road in life that I really didn’t think I would be at, and it’s just opening a lot of doors for me.”
Q: What do you like the most about UTRGV?
A: “The culture. Everybody is very welcoming and warm and everybody wants to see you succeed.”
Q: What are your biggest goals?
A: “One of my biggest goals is to win a [Western Athletic Conference] championship for the school.”
