Freshman Henry Wang is on the UTRGV Golf Team. Wang is pursuing a bachelor’s in kinesiology and hopes to work in a school and possibly become a coach or a professor. He graduated from Macleans High School in Auckland, New Zealand, and this is his first year with the program.
Q: What do you do for fun outside of golf?
A: “I love going to the [UREC] and working out and playing volleyball and just hanging out with my friends, playing other sports. I’ve been playing tennis and basketball. I’ve been going for runs, occasionally.”
Q: What movies or shows do you like?
A: “I don’t really watch any shows or movies, but I really enjoyed watching the ‘Fast and Furious’ franchise. And just watching YouTube. The ‘Sidemen,’ just, like, the UK people.”
Q: What kind of music do you like?
A: “I honestly enjoy all genres. My team has gotten me into listening to country music last semester. But I enjoy listening to pop and rap. A1 x J1 and Eminem.”
Q: Who is one of your role models?
A: “Tiger Woods. … Someone in my life would be my dad. My dad’s real hard-working. So, he’s instilled in me, like, working hard and enjoying the process of getting better, achieving goals.”
Q: What motivates you?
A: “Seeing people around me do well, and I want to improve myself and be able to see what they’re achieving.”
Q: Would you want to keep playing golf or do something with kinesiology?
A:. “I kind of want to work in a school. So, it could be being a college golf coach, or working as a professor or teacher. If I do become insanely good in golf one day, I’ll consider it.”
Q: What has been your proudest moment?
A: “OK, so when I just started out, I played in a net competition. I shot six under my handicap, in Auckland, New Zealand. I think I was 11 or 12.”
Q: What do you like about UTRGV?
A: “I really enjoyed the team chemistry and being able to hang out with everyone and the team and meeting a lot of new people around school and campus.”
