Sherman Brashear is a senior guard for the UTRGV Men’s Basketball Team. Brashear is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in multidisciplinary studies and graduated from Rockwall High School. He enjoys spending time with friends and family and going to the beach.
Q: What do you do for fun outside of basketball?
A: “Since I’m close to the beach, I like to go to the beach. Hang out with my teammates, go to Topgolf and, you know, just hang with family and friends. I enjoy being around my teammates, family and love the weather out here. So, any time I can go to the beach, I love to do that.”
Q: What do you like about the Rio Grande Valley?
A: “The Valley is unique, I like it a lot. It’s peaceful, you know, not a lot going on. The food is excellent; people are nice. The Valley has a lot to offer.”
Q: What kind of music do you like?
A: “I like all types. I actually just started listening to country music like a month ago. My two go-to genres are hip-hop and R&B for sure. My favorite two artists right now are probably Lil Baby and Drake. [For] R&B, J. Cole and SZA. Favorite songs, I’m listening to a song Drake just dropped with SZA, ‘Slime You Out.’ I’ve been playing it on repeat for the last three or four days.”
Q: What movies or shows do you like?
A: “I’m not really into movies. … But I’m really into sports. I watch any sport, football, golf, basketball, baseball. I like sports documentaries, like ‘Last Dance,’ a Deion [Sanders] movie I watched recently, a Serena Williams documentary, so I’m really into documentaries.”
Q: Who is one of your role models?
A: “I say my biggest role models in my life are my parents and my sister for sure, you know? The hard work they do on a daily basis to provide for me and our family, it definitely drives me every day to make sure I’m going my hardest so one day I’m able to provide for mine.”
Q: What motivates you?
A: “What motivates me is the drive to get better. It’s like a maze and it’s never ending. It’s always something to perfect, something to get better at. Waking up every day to, you know, be able to perfect my craft, that’s what motivates me.”
Q: Would you want to keep playing or do something with your degree?
A:. “I want to play basketball as long as I can, until the wheels fall off. Once the time comes when I can’t play basketball anymore, then I definitely want to venture off into maybe sports agency, sports marketing, you know? Something in the field of sports, but I definitely want to stick around for sure.”
Q: Do you have a fun fact about yourself?
A: “A lot of people don’t know but I can play the drums. … I haven’t played as frequently. I learned when I was about 6 years old playing around in my church and this older gentleman showed me how to play. So, I’ve been playing ever since.”
Q: What are some of your personal goals?
A: “Really my main goal right now is just do whatever I need to do to help my team win a [Western Athletic Conference] Championship. Last year, I felt like we left a lot on the table, and this year I just want to make sure that I can help my team maximize our main goal of winning the WAC Championship and move on to the NCAA tournament.”
