UTRGV will offer more employment opportunities for graduate students this summer, according to a university official who spoke earlier today during Congressman Henry Cuellar’s Telephone Town Hall for High School and College Students.
Graduate student Jacqueline Lopez joined the town hall to ask for advice on how to apply for more financial aid opportunities.
University President Guy Bailey, who took part in the town hall, said there will be new employment opportunities for graduate students in summer and fall.
“We just allocated about $700,000 for graduate student employment opportunities for the summer,” Bailey said. “There are a variety of things that you can work in.”
Bailey also mentioned the emergency relief fund, which provides limited, last-resort, financial assistance to currently enrolled students who are experiencing a sudden emergency and require additional monetary assistance in order to support their ability to stay enrolled, according to the university website.
Eligibility requirements can be viewed here.
Maggie Hinojosa, vice president for Strategic Enrollment, added the university can make “income reductions” with the appropriate documentation to help students out.
“Whether you’re a graduate student or an undergraduate student, if you have had an income loss or anything that has impacted your income, please contact our financial aid office at 888-882-4026, or you can email us at financialaid@utrgv.edu,” Hinojosa said during the town hall.
The university also shared a three-page document with Cuellar (D-Texas) before the town hall that includes the university’s response to COVID-19 and its efforts to help students, including the Student Food Pantry and telecounseling.
This document will be posted on https://cuellar.house.gov/, according to Cuellar, who encourages other universities to take a look and learn from one another.
The town hall also included presidents and superintendents of various high schools and colleges across Cuellar’s 28th District, including the University of Texas at San Antonio, Trinity University, Laredo College and United Independent School District.
Six questions were answered during the hour time frame. Cuellar encouraged students with further questions to contact their school for answers.
For more information on UTRGV financial aid opportunities, students are encouraged to email president@utrgv.edu and Bailey will direct the appropriate department.
