Beyond The Game: Yariel Matute

Yariel Matute, a criminal justice junior, is a sprinter for the UTRGV Men’s Track and Field Team.

If you could be any animal, what would it be and why? “I would say an eagle because flying. … I just think it’s pretty cool to be able to fly.”

What TV show are you currently into? “I actually don’t watch TV at all.”

Do you have any hidden talents? “I can run really fast. … I don’t know if it’s hidden.” [Laughs.]

If you could have dinner with any celebrity or athlete, who would it be? “I would say LeBron

James.”

Who is your personal hero, and why? “I would just say my mom is my personal hero, just because she has

never given up on me.”

Who makes you laugh the most on the team? “Coach [Otis] McDaniel makes me laugh the most on the

team.”

What is the best advice you’ve received recently? “Don’t chase a record or a time, just run and have fun

with it.”

Pizza or tacos? “Pizza.”

If a song played every time you walked into a room, what song would that be? “I would say

‘Imagine That’ by Kevin Gates.

On your off time, what do you like to do? “I would say stretch and foam roll to be ready, just to keep my

body loose.”

What is your main goal this track season? “To make it to the regional level.”
