This semester, Ruth Carter, an Academy Award-winning costume designer, will be the Distinguished Speaker Series guest at 7:30 p.m. March 2 in the PlainsCapital Bank Theater on the Edinburg campus.

Carter has worked in the costume design industry over three decades and has been credited in over 40 films, including her most recent work in “Black Panther,” according to her official website.

Elianey Moya, program coordinator for Student Activities, said the DSS is a signature program that aims to provide the university and its surrounding communities with world-class leaders and lecturers.

“The objective is for the students to be exposed to these speakers in hopes to have our students, faculty, staff and community think about their own challenges or their own experiences,” Moya said. “And, hopefully, these speakers are able to encourage them to overcome those challenges.”

She said the committee selected Carter because she would be able to bring insightful experience for theatre and costume design students.

“She will be hosting a master class with the theatre students, but it’s going to be a private master class,” Moya said.

Jorge Guerrero, a computer engineering senior, said Carter’s lecture would benefit different students.

“Specifically, theatre students that have some kind of major in costume design,” Guerrero said. “Or even just bringing her thoughts on how she got into the career and how she can express herself and, you know, give some light to different students.”

He said, as a computer engineering student, he would like to see Elon Musk as a speaker in the future.

Musk is a “South African-born American entrepreneur and businessman who founded X.com in 1999 (which later became PayPal), SpaceX in 2002 and Tesla Motors in 2003,” according to biography.com.

The event will also be live streamed in Salón Cassia on the Brownsville campus. The event is open to the public and admission is free.

Students, faculty and staff must bring their IDs. The doors for UTRGV students will open at 7 p.m. and 7:15 p.m. to the public.
