Stand-up comedian and actor Langston Kerman visited UTRGV on his birthday last Tuesday to present his stand-up comedy show at the PlainsCapital Bank Student Union Theater.
Kerman was invited to perform by the Campus Programming Board.
During his set, Kerman joked about his nervousness to be engaged, his former career as a teacher and about his stay in Edinburg.
He said he taught high school English.
“Are any of you planning to go into education?” Kerman asked. “No? Good. That’s a hard job.”
He said he had never been called “mister” and “bitch” more in his life.
Mimicking his students, he said, “It’s like, ‘Hey, mister. Why you a bitch?’”
“One time a kid called me ‘Mr. Bitch’ and that hurt more somehow,” he said.
He explained more about his students.
“[It] makes it seem like I earned the title,” Kerman said. “Like I worked my way up. Like while the rest of you were lollygagging and playing around I was fucking focused on being the best bitch I could be.”
He said it was a tough job and that he quit on a Wednesday once he could afford to live off comedy.
“And I quit in the middle of the year because I did not give a shit about those kids,” he said.
Kerman also discussed his recent arrival from his trip to Australia. He said he stayed there for three weeks and flew to Edinburg the day before the presentation.
“I pet a koala. I was hanging out with kangaroos and shit. I was looking around for, like, some Chris-Hemsworth-looking motherfucker. You know what I mean? A big, white man with kind eyes, that’s the whole vibe out there, and now I’m here,” he said, laughing.
After his performance, five show posters signed by Kerman, were raffled and students were allowed to take pictures with him.
CPB is currently planning a student trip to Florida next. There are still two tickets left to purchase.
“Right now, we’re planning our summer trip to Orlando, Florida,” said Pablo Granados, junior business management student. “We’ll be going to Disney World and Universal Studios.”
Granados said the trip will take place from May 11 to 19.
“Whoever comes first, gets to have those last two tickets,” he said.
The purpose of the trip is two-fold.
“We just want to have students take a break, especially since its summer, have something to do with them,” Granado said. “And, also in that trip we’ll be able to incorporate educational lessons into it.”
He said once students arrive at Disney, they will receive a presentation about the jobs they offer and learn lessons about the workplace.
For more information about the Florida trip, call Student Activities on the Brownsville campus at 882-5111 or 665-7365 in Edinburg.
