The UTRGV Women’s Golf Team is preparing to compete at the Western Athletic Conference Championship that will take place Thursday through Saturday at Oakbrook Golf Club in Lakewood, Wash.

The Vaqueras will compete in the WAC Championship after finishing in sixth place at the Kansas City Intercollegiate Tournament last Tuesday at Creekmoor Golf Course in Raymore, Mo.

UTRGV Women’s Golf junior Vicky Gonzalez practices last Thursday at the Los Lagos Golf Club in Edinburg before heading to the Western Athletic Conference Championship.

In an interview with The Rider, Bryan Novoa, Vaqueras head coach, discussed what his expectations are for the team in the conference championship.

“My expectations are normally just doing our playing in a manner where we can control,” Novoa said. “I believe golf is an interesting game and it’s like anything can happen. I would be very pleased to finish in the top three or four at the conference championship, but I know how strong our conference competition is.”

He also talked about a possible game plan that he has been working on, but it isn’t official. Coach Novoa said he and the team will decide which strategy to use because factors like weather could affect a previous plan.

UTRGV freshman golfer Julie Lucio, a graduate of Veterans Memorial High School in Brownsville, was asked about her feelings on the upcoming competition.

“I’m very excited for this tournament,” Lucio said. “It’s gonna be my first one, so I’m being excited, I’m gonna practice as well as I can in preparation for it.”

The team is expected to arrive in Seattle on Tuesday, so they can practice on Wednesday and start the competition on the right foot on Thursday.
