The UTRGV Men’s Tennis Team battled and lost 6-1 against Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi last Wednesday as part of the South Texas Showdown at the Orville I. Cox Tennis Center on the Edinburg campus.
During doubles, junior Zane Kohrs and senior Mateo Schmit scored the only point for UTRGV by beating their A&M opponents, Kyohei Yamanaka and Carlos Berna Ruiz.
Kohrs said the match was a tough result.
“I’m happy that I got my match, but that doesn’t really matter since we lost the match as a whole,” Kohrs said.
Despite UTRGV’s efforts, the Islanders would take the advantage into singles.
A&M-Corpus Christi’s Head Coach Steve Moore praised UTRGV’s performance.
“This is one of the toughest places we play on the road here in Edinburg,” Moore said. “I got a ton of respect for UTRGV and Coach Dann Nelson … these are the kind of battles that make you sharp for conference.”
Corpus Christi won at the No. 4, 2, 6, 3 and 1 to secure the match against the Vaqueros.
UTRGV Men’s Tennis Head Coach Dann Nelson believes all this tough competition will continue to pay off.
“We’re 0-4 now, but we’ve played some really good competition and we’re getting better each time,” Nelson said. “So, all season, the competition is not going to be like this week in, week out, sometimes better, sometimes not as good as the team we just played, but I think we’re learning from it.”
Nelson said the team needs to be prepared for Laredo Community College.
“Our last four matches [have] been really tough,” he said. “So, I feel like we’ve played great competition to get us ready to play against Laredo.”
The Vaqueros will face Laredo Community College at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Orville Cox Tennis Center.
