With Thanksgiving around the corner, H-E-B’s Feast of Sharing aims to continue the fight against hunger by providing free meals at its annual holiday dinner.
“The H-E-B Feast of Sharing is a series of festive gatherings that include more than 250,000 meals served during 33 dinners throughout Texas and Mexico,” according to the H-E-B website. “Filled with food, music, and good cheer, these free holiday feasts bring together family, friends and neighbors, and provides H-E-B an opportunity to give thanks to its loyal customers.”
This year, the dinner is scheduled to take place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday in the Jacob Brown Auditorium in Brownsville and at the same time Sunday in the McAllen Convention Center.
Other feasts will take place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday in the Harlingen Community Center, 5 to 8 p.m. Nov. 13 at Port Isabel High School, 5 to 8 p.m. Dec. 5 at Fort Ringgold Elementary School in Rio Grande City and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Dec. 14 in the St. Joan of Arc Parish in Weslaco.
As reported by The Rider newspaper on Oct. 17, the City of Brownsville-Multimodal Transportation entered into an agreement with the H-E-B grocery chain to offer free passenger rides to the annual H-E-B Feast of Sharing event. The free rides will be available from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Residents wishing to attend the feast will be dropped off at the La Plaza at Brownsville Terminal.
Paratransit attendees will be dropped off at the Jacob Brown Auditorium.
The feast will feature live entertainment from local high school mariachis and a live DJ.
Meals will consist of turkey, stuffing, green beans and pumpkin pie.
About 400 to 600 volunteers will be on hand to help during the event in Brownsville, according to Yvonne Loflin, H-E-B senior public affairs specialist for the border region.
Loflin said the event will provide free flu shots for attendees.
“We just want to invite everybody to come out to the Feast of Sharing this year,” she said. “We really appreciate the support that we get all year round. This is a way of giving back to our faithful customers and those who are in need of a hot holiday meal.”
