UTRGV students on the Edinburg and Brownsville campuses can team up with their friends and face off against each other in sport competitions throughout the semester.
“It’s just that old school, you know, back in the day when you were back as a kid and played and you had a good time,” said Fernando Labra, UTRGV coordinator of intramurals and club sports in Edinburg.
Flag football, softball, kickball (co-ed), indoor volleyball and soccer, as well as tennis doubles and singles are among sports offered in Edinburg. Tournaments and one-day events in other sports will be available throughout the fall.
The registration deadline for flag football, indoor volleyball and tennis doubles is Sept. 11. Play starts Sept. 17.
For indoor soccer, softball, tennis singles and kickball (co-ed), the registration deadline is Oct. 23, with play starting Oct. 29.
Deadlines for tournaments and one-day events in Edinburg are as follows:
–beach volleyball tournament, 11:30 p.m. Aug. 28
–preseason flag football tournament, 11:30 p.m. Sept. 6
–lawn game Olympics at Unity Hall, 11:30 p.m. Sept. 9
–pingpong, 11:30 p.m. Sept. 12
–badminton tournament, 11:30 p.m. Sept. 13
–lawn game Olympics at Heritage Hall, 11:30 p.m. Oct. 7
–3-on-3 basketball tournament, 11:30 p.m. Nov. 4
–racquetball, 11:30 p.m. Nov. 11
–4-on-4 flag football, 11:30 p.m. Dec. 2

The Brownsville campus will offer flag football, indoor soccer, Ultimate Frisbee and basketball. Volleyball, softball, pingpong and dodgeball tournaments will take place throughout the semester.

–volleyball tournament, 5 p.m. Sept. 12
–softball tournament, 5 p.m. Sept. 26
–indoor soccer league, 5 p.m. Oct. 4

–basketball league, 5 p.m. Nov. 1
–dodgeball tournament, 5 p.m. Nov. 7

All participants must be registered UTRGV students to compete. Texas Southmost College students can also participate in leagues and tournaments on the Brownsville campus.
On both campuses there are “free agent” programs in which students who do not have a team can be picked by other teams missing members. If there are enough free agents, then the free agents will be placed together in a team.
“It’s a great way to network and meet new people, also a great way to relieve stress while having fun outside of the gym atmosphere,” said Agnelia Hernandez, coordinator of intramural sports for the Recreation Center. “You know, not everybody likes to go run on the treadmill.”
