I regularly read the articles to know what is going on in my university and appreciate the continued relevant information coming from such a reliable source.
In the latest article about the Student Government Association’s meeting, [“SGA seeks more no-smoking signs,” utrgvrider.com, Oct. 6], I noticed a section that was subtitled “Financial Affairs Standing Committee.” In this, I read how Julian Verdream, Financial Affairs Standing Committee chair, responded to a question asking why the application period was only 15 days. He replied, “… the committee does not want to extend the application period because then it will get inundated with requests, as it did in the last quarter.”
I quote this because I feel insulted by the response given by one of the members, who are supposed to be representing me. This member states that they don’t want to be “inundated with requests.”
This makes me feel like those who are supposed to be helping me achieve my goals are inconvenienced by my requests for funding to achieve said goals. If this is what I am to expect from my representatives, then all I see are a bunch of people who are in this association for their résumés, instead of truly representing the student body.
The Student Government Association’s purpose is to assist us in resolving issues. To people applying for these funds, the issue is finances. The SGA members need to realize that this issue can be the difference between graduating employed and graduating unemployed as many of the conferences people applying for financing to attend are intended to help us network with companies that may offer said employment opportunities.
