Right now, students are facing one of the hardest times of their collegiate life because of the inability to socialize with people on a daily basis. While talking and socializing can be seen as a distraction, it is also necessary to maintain a healthy mind.
Studies conducted by the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign show that students have a need to communicate with each other to deal with college stressors. Whether students
have moved to a new city for school or stayed in their hometown, college can present a variety of issues, from stress from grades to preparing for their future and even just having to confront their future altogether.
Amid COVID-19, socialization may look different, but there are benefits to taking a 20-minute study break to call one of your friends or family members to feed that need for communication.
I do not insist that you spend the entire day ignoring your responsibilities by participating in a
turn-table of Zoom calls and FaceTime calls. However, I do urge you to call a
friend every once and a while and remember that your mental health is
important. You never know what missing factor for enhancing your studying could
be hidden in a conversation between you and a friend.
