Police Reports

Aug. 28

6:53 a.m.: Four non-affiliated men climbed over the border fence and entered the brush area between Lot B-1 and Levee Road on the Brownsville campus. UTRGV officers and U.S. Border Patrol responded to the location, and USBP agents took custody of all four men. Two men were from Honduras, one man and one juvenile were from Mexico.

7:44 a.m.: A non-affiliated man’s parked, unattended vehicle was scratched in Lot E-33 on the Edinburg campus. After reviewing footage from the area, the cause of the damage is undetermined.

9:06 a.m.: Two students were involved in a minor two-vehicle collision in Lot E-16 on the Edinburg campus. No injuries were reported.

12:01 p.m.: A student’s parked, unattended vehicle sustained damage in Lot E-25 on the Edinburg campus. The front bumper had clear signs of damage.

12:54 p.m.: A student reported applying for a protective order against a non-affiliated man off-campus in McAllen. She is applying due to off-campus harassments and threats.

1:02 p.m.: Officers responded to reports of the smell of smoke detected on the third floor of Liberal Arts Building North on the Edinburg campus. The Edinburg Fire Department determined that the building’s heater was activated, causing dust on the heating coils to burn, releasing a strong odor. They later cleared the building for re-entry.

2:59 p.m.: The Edinburg Fire Department supervisor reported that a driver damaged some landscaping in the south west corner of Lot E-9 on the Edinburg campus while responding to a fire call at Liberal Arts Building South.

Aug. 30

9:49 a.m.: A student lost her access card on the Student Union lawn on the Brownsville campus. Facilities was notified, and the card was deactivated.

10:41 a.m.: A staff member reported her bank deposit was short $100 at Student Services on the Edinburg campus. The amount deposited by the university had a counterfeit $100 bill, which was submitted to the U.S. Secret Service. The report was filed to document the $100 loss to the university.

10:56 a.m.: A fire alarm was activated at the Visual Arts Building on the Edinburg campus. It was determined it was activated due to a dirty smoke detector. The fire department later cleared the building for re-entry.

2:38 p.m.:  A non-affiliated man made concerning comments about a staff member off-campus in Edinburg. He was issued a criminal trespass warning for all UTRGV properties.

3:11 p.m.: A university-owned vehicle was in a collision on Ridgely Road near Texas Southmost College North Hall in Brownsville. The vehicle sustained damage to the passenger door, and no injuries were reported.

Sept. 1

11:05 p.m.: A student reported an unknown person was extorting him through a social media app at Troxel Hall on the Edinburg campus.

Sept. 2

10:33 p.m.: Two individuals jumped the border fence in Lot B-1 on the Brownsville campus. U.S. Border Patrol apprehended one of the individuals, but the other was not located.

Sept. 3

9 a.m.: A student reported a fellow classmate threatened her and her family when she was in high school in 2018 at the Main Building on the Brownsville campus. At the time, no report was filed with law enforcement or the school district. She wanted to document the incident in case the individual was now a UTRGV student. He was found not to be affiliated in the university system.

10:51 a.m.: Two students were involved in a minor two-vehicle collision in Lot B-1 on the Brownsville campus. No injuries were reported.

11:31 a.m.: A non-affiliated man reported that another non-affiliated man used his state driver’s license without his consent at a local store
off-campus.
