Sept. 9
4:33 p.m.: A fire alarm was activated at Heritage Hall on the Edinburg campus. Housing staff activated the alarm pull station after smelling smoke in the building. Edinburg Fire Department checked and later cleared the building for re-entry.
7:22 p.m.: A student was stuck in the elevator on the third floor at the University Library on the Edinburg campus. She was later able to safely get out of the elevator, which was shut off. A work order was made.
Sept. 10
9:47 a.m.: The front-right passenger window of a student’s vehicle shattered while traveling in Lot E-16 on the Edinburg campus. It was caused by a facilities employee using a grass trimmer in the area.
3:19 p.m.: A student lost a university-issued access card on the Brownsville campus. Access control was contacted to deactivate the card.
9:53 p.m.: A student suffered a severe nosebleed at the Education Complex on the Edinburg campus. She recently had sinus surgery and had been experiencing nosebleeds. The student was transported to Doctors Hospital at Renaissance.
Sept. 11
12:38 a.m.: A staff member’s unattended lunch bag was stolen from Health Affairs Building West on the Edinburg campus.
2:27 a.m.: A staff member’s parked, unattended vehicle was burglarized in Lot E-37 on the Edinburg campus. Several personal items were stolen, but there were no signs of forced entry.
10:20 a.m.: A non-affiliated woman tripped over a parking space cement block in Lot H-3 on the Harlingen campus. She hit the right side of her forehead and cheek on a nearby vehicle’s bumper. The woman was treated by emergency medical services but refused medical transport.
2:30 p.m.: A student reported U.S. currency was stolen from his briefly lost wallet on Sept. 9 at the Student Union on the Edinburg campus. The wallet had been turned in to lost and found with missing currency.
6:42 p.m.: A student reported a classmate may be following her and possibly took a photo of her outside of her class at the Education Complex on the Edinburg campus. The student was advised of the services available at UTRGV.
Sept. 12
9:27 a.m.: Two students were involved in a two-vehicle collision in Lot E-16 on the Edinburg campus. No injuries were reported.
Noon: An unknown man approached a student claiming to need help finding a lost item at Lincoln Park near the Brownsville campus. He approached her two different times with the same story. No threats were made, but the student was uncomfortable with the encounter. NOTE: UTRGV police officers identified the man at Lincoln Park. He has no affiliation with UTRGV.
1:14 p.m.: A suspicious non-affiliated man was seen running eastbound on West University Boulevard on the Brownsville campus. The officer observed the man showed signs of intoxication and determined he was a danger to himself. The man was arrested on charges of public intoxication and later jailed in the Brownsville City Jail.
1:40 p.m.: A student found circular scratches made on the hood of her vehicle at the Community Engagement & Student Success Building parking lot in Edinburg.
2:13 p.m.: A student was hit by a vehicle driven by another student in Lot B-1 on the Brownsville campus. She complained of pain on the left side of her body and was transported to a local hospital by emergency medical services.
7:48 p.m.: A faculty member suffered a stroke at the Music, Science & Learning Center on the Brownsville campus. Emergency medical services transported him to a local hospital and his wife was notified.
10:36 p.m.: A student’s vehicle sustained a flat tire after hitting the curb at Lincoln Park near the Brownsville campus. UTRGV police officers provided vehicle assistance.
Sept. 13
8:51 a.m.: A student fell while walking down the stairs of the Music, Science & Learning Center on the Brownsville campus. He misstepped, causing him to fall and injure his right leg and knee. He declined emergency medical services.
9:36 a.m.: A student complained of lightheadedness and requested emergency medical services at the Student Union on the Brownsville campus. Once evaluated, it was determined that her blood pressure was low. She declined medical transport.
12:39 p.m.: A staff member was detained on a misdemeanor theft warrant at the Academic Support Facility on the Edinburg campus. He was detained without incident and Edinburg police arrived to execute the warrant.
3:21 p.m.: A student fell off his bike trying to avoid striking a moving vehicle in Lot E-37 on the Edinburg campus. He suffered minor cuts and scrapes to both knees and was treated at the Student Health Center.
4:12 p.m.: A student reported that she recently broke up with her ex-boyfriend and is in the process of moving out of their shared apartment off campus. She said she is seeking the assistance of Student Rights and Responsibilities. There have been no threats or physical violence at this time.
Sept. 14
4:25 a.m.: An officer found a non-affiliated man asleep in the driver’s seat of an improperly parked vehicle in Lot E-22 on the Edinburg campus. The officer detected the smell of burnt marijuana, and with a probable cause search, found a small amount on the driver’s side floorboard. The man was issued a citation on charges of possession of drug paraphernalia. The man and vehicle were released to a family member.
6:13 p.m.: A man was seen walking along the southside of the U.S. border fence through cameras near the Brownsville campus. Officers contacted the man, and U.S. Border Patrol was notified. Two USBP agents took the man into custody. He was from Mexico and had crossed illegally.
Sept. 15
2:37 a.m.: A non-affiliated man was found in an apartment with a student without proper authorization after an unknown man made an anonymous phone call about a violation of housing rules and regulations at Casa Bella Apartments on the Brownsville campus. The man was issued a criminal trespass warning and left the area without incident.
