Oct. 7

9:56 a.m.: A student’s purse was stolen at the snack bar in the Engineering building on the Edinburg campus. At 3:30 p.m., another student came by the police department to turn in the missing purse.

4:28 p.m.: A student’s unsecured bicycle was stolen from the bike racks outside Unity Hall on the Edinburg campus. An unidentified man was observed taking the student’s bicycle via camera footage. Detectives identified the man and recovered the stolen bicycle at an off-campus location. He was issued a criminal trespass warning, but no criminal charges were filed.

Oct. 8

10:08 a.m.: Two students were involved in a traffic collision in Lot E-25 on the Edinburg campus. The damage sustained was estimated to be over $1,000. No injuries were reported.

2:03 p.m.: A faculty member suffered from anxiety and shortness of breath while teaching class on the Edinburg campus. Emergency medical services evaluated him, but he declined medical transport.

3:02 p.m.: A student’s parked, unattended vehicle was struck in Lot E-26 on the Edinburg campus.

8:38 p.m.: Two men were seen jumping the U.S. border fence south of Lot B-1 on the Brownsville campus. After conducting a search of the surrounding area, the men were located and detained by U.S. Border Patrol. They were both from Mexico.

Oct. 9

1:27 p.m.: A staff member struck a parked, unattended vehicle while reversing in Lot H-2 on the Harlingen campus. Both vehicles sustained minor damage. No injuries were reported.

1:44 p.m.: Two students were involved in a minor traffic collision in Lot E-25 on the Edinburg campus. The damage sustained is estimated to be over $1,000. No injuries were reported.

Oct. 10

1:08 p.m.: Two students were involved in a traffic collision in Lot E-19 on the Edinburg campus. The damage sustained was estimated to be over $1,000. No injuries were reported.

3:50 p.m.: A former student attempted to attend a Latino Medical Student Association meeting at the Science building on the Edinburg campus. Student Rights and Responsibilities previously instructed him not to attend or make any attempt to contact the group. He was later located at the recreational center and issued a criminal trespass warning.

5:35 p.m.: Two students were involved in a traffic collision in Lot E-27 on the Edinburg campus. The damage sustained was estimated to be over $1,000 but no injuries were reported.

6:29 p.m.: A staff member was involved in a traffic collision while driving a university-owned vehicle on Jackson Road and University Drive near the Edinburg campus. No damage or injuries were reported.

8:55 p.m.: A student and a non-affiliated man were possibly engaged in inappropriate conduct inside a vehicle in Lot B-4 on the Brownsville campus. Investigation of the issue revealed no misconduct had occurred.

Oct. 11

12:25 p.m.: A student reported his parked, unattended vehicle sustained visible damage to the front bumper in Lot E-16 on the Edinburg campus on Oct. 10. 

2:41 p.m.: A faculty member accidentally struck a student with her vehicle while reversing in Lot E-18 on the Edinburg campus. The student suffered minor injuries and was transported to Edinburg Regional Medical Center. She was treated for a contusion on her head and lip area.

3:17 p.m.: A child suffered a seizure at the Child Development Center (CDC) on the Edinburg campus. Emergency medical services transported the child to the Edinburg Children’s Hospital for further evaluation. CDC staff contacted the child’s mother. 

11:37 p.m.: A resident assistant detected the odor of alcohol near a dorm room in Unity Hall on the Edinburg campus. Resident assistants conducted a health and safety check and found one empty alcoholic beverage bottle. The residents were not present at the time but the resident assistant referred the matter administratively since they are under 21.

Oct. 12

12:37 a.m.: An intoxicated student was found unconscious at Unity Hall on the Edinburg campus. He woke up and was treated by emergency medical services. The student admitted to drinking alcoholic beverages and was issued a citation on charges of consumption of alcohol by a minor.

1:20 a.m.: An allegedly intoxicated student was found unconscious and in need of medical attention in her dorm room at Unity Hall on the Edinburg campus. She claimed to have consumed alcohol at an off-campus party. The student was issued a citation on charges of consumption of alcohol by a minor.

1:35 a.m.: The odor of burning material was detected in one of the exterior mechanical rooms in the Academic Support Facility on the Edinburg campus. Officers found smoke after checking the room and the Edinburg Fire Department arrived to check the room. The cause of the smoke and odor were from a faulty compressor belt. Environmental Health, Safety & Risk Management staff arrived to address the compressor and the fire department cleared the building for re-entry.

8:35 a.m.: A UTRGV officer assisted an Edinburg police officer with a traffic accident on the 200 block of North 12th Avenue in Edinburg. The driver involved in the accident was later arrested by the Edinburg Police Department on charges of driving while intoxicated.

12:36 p.m.: A fire alarm was activated by a sensor in an air handler in Cavalry Hall on the Brownsville campus. The Edinburg Fire Department and the Environmental Health, Safety & Risk Management staff responded to the alarm. The Health and Safety staff later cleared the building for re-entry.

5:58 p.m.: A student reported his parked, unattended vehicle sustained visible damage to the right rear quarter panel in Lot E-16 on the Edinburg campus on Oct. 12.

11:28 p.m.: A student’s bicycle lock was found damaged while it was secured outside the Science building on the Edinburg campus.
