Oct. 14
11:30 a.m.: A university-owned camera was reported missing at the Student Union on the Brownsville campus. The camera was last used Sept. 4 and is valued at over $1,000. It has been entered into the National Crime Information Center and the Texas Crime Information Center.
1:30 p.m.: A staff member’s vehicle sustained minor scratches in Lot E-12 on the Edinburg campus. It was revealed via camera footage that the damage was not caused while her vehicle was parked at the university.
5:54 p.m.: A staff member was struck by a vehicle in Lot E-37 on the Edinburg campus. The driver was later identified as an employee from a university-contracted company. Emergency medical services transported the staff member to Rio Grande Regional 24 Hour Emergency Care.
6:52 p.m.: A non-affiliated man solicited money from a student at the Visual Arts building in Edinburg. He was identified, issued a criminal trespass warning and escorted off campus without incident.
Oct. 15
3:01 a.m.: Three men were seen running by the UTRGV land bridge on the Brownsville campus. U.S. Border Patrol arrived and detained eight individuals, all from Mexico.
2:37 p.m.: A fire alarm was activated in the Engineering building on the Edinburg campus. The Edinburg Fire Department responded to the alarm and later cleared the building for re-entry.
4:01 p.m.: A bookstore employee received a phone call from a Mexican phone number at the bookstore on the Brownsville campus. It was determined to be a scam, but no other suspicious activity was discovered.
4:05 p.m.: A staff member hit her head with a falling cabinet door while cleaning at the UT Houston Regional Academic Health Center on the Brownsville campus. Emergency medical service transported her to a local hospital for further evaluation.
9:24 p.m.: While conducting a traffic stop on a vehicle for a defective license plate light on University Boulevard near the Brownsville campus, it was revealed the driver had a warrant on charges for driving while intoxicated from the Cameron County Sheriff’s Office. The driver was placed under arrest and transported to the Cameron County Detention Center.
Oct. 16
1:07 p.m.: A student was followed by several individuals while in Edinburg. She also filed a report with the Edinburg Police Department.
5:10 p.m.: A staff member’s windshield of his parked, unattended vehicle was cracked in Lot E-37 on the Edinburg campus. After reviewing camera footage, it does not appear that the damage occurred as reported.
Oct. 17
9:01 a.m.: A student was involved in a disturbance with her non-affiliated ex-boyfriend in front of the Liberal Arts Building North on the Edinburg campus. He took her backpack, stole her Texas drivers license, broke her vehicle’s remote control and physically assaulted her. He also left voicemail messages and texts threatening her wellbeing, causing the student to fear for her safety. UTRGV PD actively searched the campus for the suspect and eventually located and arrested him without incident in Lot E-18 on the Edinburg campus. He was found in possession of the student’s stolen license. He was jailed in the Edinburg City Jail, and his vehicle was impounded.
9:01 a.m.: A student’s non-affiliated ex-boyfriend physically assaulted her on Oct. 14 at Liberal Arts Building North on the Edinburg campus. She received visible injuries on her upper arms and legs. The suspect was located and arrested in Lot E-18 without incident on the Edinburg campus. He was jailed in the Edinburg City Jail, and his vehicle was impounded.
11:29 a.m.: A fire alarm was activated in the Engineering building on the Edinburg campus. The Edinburg Fire Department responded to the alarm and later cleared the building for re-entry.
11:57 a.m.: Two students were arguing over stolen AirPods at the Health & Physical Education II building on the Edinburg campus. One of the students accused the other of stealing her AirPods from her unattended backpack. Her AirPods were later located in the area, but appeared to be purposely concealed to avoid detection.
12:20 p.m.: A student’s vehicle’s back, right window was shattered by a Facilities employee while using a weed trimmer near the University Recreation building on the Edinburg campus. Facilities is currently making the necessary arrangements to repair the window.
Oct. 18
1:43 a.m.: A fire alarm was activated in the Engineering building on the Edinburg campus. The Edinburg Fire Department responded to the alarm and later cleared the building for re-entry.
3:23 p.m.: A non-affiliated man caused a disturbance at UCentral in the Main building on the Brownsville campus. He was upset over his daughter’s financial aid, but left before the officer’s arrival.
5:40 p.m.: Marijuana was found in the University Library on the Edinburg campus. The item was secured for proper destruction.
9:17 p.m.: A fire alarm was activated in the Health & Physical Education Complex on the Edinburg campus. The Edinburg Fire Department responded to the alarm and determined a smoke machine used for an activity triggered it. They later cleared the building for re-entry.
Oct. 20
1:26 a.m.: Five individuals were seen running towards University Boulevard on the Brownsville campus. U.S. Border Patrol agents detained four individuals in the brush area by Lot B-1 but the fifth individual was not found. Three were from Mexico and the fourth was from Honduras. U.S. Border Patrol took custody of the individuals without further incident.
6:34 p.m.: Two suspicious, non-affiliated men were seen at the University Library on the Edinburg campus. While an officer located and identified the two, it was revealed one of the men had an active arrest warrant on charges of driving while intoxicated from the Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office. They were both issued criminal trespass warnings and a Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office deputy arrived and took custody of the man.
Oct. 21
1:44 a.m.: A burglary alarm was activated at the UT Health RGV Surgery & Women’s Specialty clinic near the Harlingen campus. An officer patrolled the exterior and interior of the building but found it was secure.
2:17 a.m.: A fire alarm was activated in Cortez Hall on the Brownsville campus. The Brownsville Fire Department responded and inspected the building. They found the fire alarm was triggered when a fire sensor got wet from a water leak during a thunderstorm. Facilities was notified.
3:20 a.m.: A fire alarm was activated at the University Library on the Brownsville campus. The Brownsville Fire Department responded and later cleared the building for re-entry. Facilities and Environmental Health, Safety & Risk Management were notified.
