11:45 a.m.: A student from Brownsville received harassing text messages on a social media application off campus. He was advised to file a report with the Brownsville Police Department and was informed of the services available at UTRGV.
12:52 p.m.: A student reported that her UTRGV access card and backpack were stolen when her home in Brownsville was burglarized. The incident was reported to the Brownsville Police Department, who will handle the investigation. The access card has been deactivated.
2:28 p.m.: A student at the Village Apartments received threatening text messages on his phone from an unknown person. The sender demanded payment. The case is under investigation.
3:45 p.m.: A male student reported that another male, who he believes to be a student, used vulgar language when confronted over a female friend, who is also a student. The male student found the language offensive. The case is under investigation.
3:55 p.m.: A student’s vehicle was struck while it was parked and unattended in Lot E19 on the Edinburg campus. The vehicle sustained visible damage. The case is under investigation.
7:25 p.m.: An officer responded to a hit-and-run accident in Lot E9 on the Edinburg campus. The driver backed out of a parking space and struck the victim’s parked vehicle. The driver then left the scene without providing the necessary information. The case is under investigation.
Feb. 5
11:50 a.m.: A student reported his black jacket was stolen from a classroom in the Engineering Building on Feb. 3 on the Edinburg campus. The jacket contained personal items. The case is under investigation.
1:47 p.m.: Two students were involved in a minor traffic collision in Lot B1 on the Brownsville campus. The vehicles sustained damage, but no injuries were reported. The case is under investigation.
2:30 p.m.: An officer responded to a fire alarm in the Academic Services Building on the Edinburg campus. Low water pressure activated the waterflow switch, causing the alarm to sound. The Edinburg Fire Department cleared the building for re-entry.
3:39 p.m.: An officer responded to a fire alarm in Unity Hall, located on the Edinburg campus. Burnt popcorn activated a smoke detector, causing the alarm to sound. The Edinburg Fire Department cleared the building for re-entry.
3:51 p.m.: An operator was involved in a verbal altercation with a passenger on a VOLT electric service vehicle. The passenger was upset because the operator refused to deviate from the VOLT route to drop off the passenger at his specified location. The passenger used vulgar language, and the operator requested that the incident be documented. The incident was referred to Students Rights and Responsibilities to determine if the passenger was a student.
Feb. 6
12:51 p.m.: A suspicious man wearing orange jail inmate pants and no shirt was seen in the area of Sabal Hall on the Brownsville campus. A responding officer attempted to identify him, but he eluded the officer. With minimal force, the officer arrested the man, who had become combative. The man suffered minor injuries that were evaluated by emergency medical services. He declined transport to a hospital. It was later determined he had been recently released by the Brownsville Police Department Jail and was provided with the jail inmate pants because he had no clothing. The man was later transported to the Brownsville City Jail. He was charged with evading arrest or detention, a Class A misdemeanor.
2:17 p.m.: An officer responded to a student experiencing chest pain at the Science Building on the Edinburg campus. Hidalgo County Emergency Medical Services transported her to the Edinburg Regional Hospital for further medical evaluation.
3:44 p.m.: A staff member’s vehicle sustained visible damage to the front windshield. The windshield had a crack that extended across half of it. There is no indication the damage occurred on UTRGV property.
Feb. 7
5:03 p.m.: A UTRGV police communications operator saw three individuals on surveillance cameras jumping the U.S. border fence behind UTRGV facilities. An officer responded to the scene and detained two individuals who stated they were from Mexico. The third individual was not located. After arriving, U.S. Border Patrol took custody of the two individuals without incident.
