Police Reports

March 1 

8:34 a.m.: A staff member reported minor damage to a university vehicle while attending an off-campus event in Brownsville on Feb. 29. He reported driving across a low-lying tree, causing damage to the top-right corner of the assigned vehicle.  

1:23 p.m.: An officer was waved down by a bystander regarding an injury involving a non-affiliated female. The non-affiliated female, while walking in Lot E-7 on the Edinburg campus, tripped and fell over a concrete tire stop. She suffered minor injuries to her right palm and right temple area. She refused medical attention.  

8:07 p.m.: An officer responded to the exterior of Troxell Hall on the Edinburg campus in reference to a non-affiliated female who claimed she injured her ankle while walking down the sidewalk. She refused medical services.

March 2

8:09 a.m.: A UTRGV Facilities Planning & Operations supervisor reported one of his employees damaged three separate vehicles–two windshields and one driver’s window–while using a grass trimmer in Lot E-37 on the Edinburg campus. The vehicles’ owners were contacted and arrangements were made for repairs. 

10:50 a.m.: A faculty member reported someone left the door open to the research specimen refrigerator in the Science Building on the Edinburg campus. Two years of research specimens were destroyed. The faculty member did not know if the incident was accidental or intentional.

12:57 p.m.: A student reported her parked, unattended vehicle was burglarized between Feb. 25 and 26 in Lot E-7 on the Edinburg campus. Her backpack was stolen from the vehicle. The case is under investigation.  

2:31 p.m.: An officer responded to the Academic Services Building on the Edinburg campus in reference to a fire alarm. A water flow sensor had triggered the alarm. The occupants were evacuated. The Edinburg Fire Department later cleared the building for re-entry. 

March 4  

10:52 a.m.: An officer responded to a student fainting in the Liberal Arts Building North on the Edinburg campus. The student later refused emergency medical services.

1:32 p.m.: A staff member reported losing his university-issued ID/access card. The card is in the process of deactivation. 

1:37 p.m.: Officers responded to a student stuck in an elevator in the Science Building on the Edinburg campus. After officers were unsuccessful in opening the elevator, UTRGV Facilities Planning & Operations arrived and assisted the student. 

2:03 p.m.: An officer met with a Brownsville Police Department officer, UTRGV shuttle driver and a non-affiliated female regarding a traffic accident occurring off campus. Both vehicles sustained minor damage. No injuries were reported.

March 5

3:28 p.m.: A staff member reported a student backed into his parked university vehicle in Lot B-5 on the Brownsville campus. The vehicle sustained minor damage. No injuries were reported. 

8:04 p.m.: A non-affiliated man stopped an officer and reported being assaulted at a local bar. The man displayed symptoms of intoxication by alcoholic beverage. He had no family member or responsible adult to take custody of him. After requesting emergency medical services, he was transported to the Edinburg Regional Hospital for medical treatment for some scratches. He was issued a court appearance citation for the offense of public intoxication and issued a criminal trespass warning for UTRGV properties.

March 6

2:09 p.m.: A staff member reported he lost a university-issued key. 

10:07 p.m.: An officer was dispatched to the Baseball Stadium on the Edinburg campus in reference to a verbal disturbance involving a student and staff member. The student reported the staff member approached her while she stood along the field’s east fence line. She reported she was attempting to catch a fly ball when he told her to leave using profane language. She wanted the incident documented. No charges were filed. 

March 7

12:20 p.m.: An officer was dispatched to the Baseball Stadium on the Edinburg campus in reference to an injured staff member. She had been struck by a baseball on her upper, right cheek while walking by the women’s restroom. She reported feeling dizzy and pain but never lost consciousness. Hidalgo Medical Services arrived and transported her to the Edinburg Regional Hospital for further evaluation. 

March 9

7:50 a.m.: Officers were dispatched to a university-owned abandoned residential building on the Edinburg campus in reference to two affiliated GED students smoking in the area. 

10:38 a.m.: A student reported he lost his Texas driver’s license on the Edinburg campus. A report was generated for documentation purposes. 

March 10

9:30 a.m.: UTRGV Police assisted U.S. Border Patrol agents in searching for two non-affiliated men in the Lincoln Park area in Brownsville. The men crossed onto the resaca area and entered a drainage pipe south of the UTRGV Biomedical Research Building. The Brownsville Fire Department and a Border Patrol Rescue Team arrived to continue the search. At approximately 1:50 p.m., UTRGV was notified by border patrol that the men had been apprehended at an off-campus location. 

4:17 p.m.: An officer was dispatched to a gas station off campus in reference to a motor vehicle accident involving a university-owned vehicle. Both vehicles sustained minor damage. No injuries were reported.

March 11

12:12 p.m.: An officer responded to Cortez Hall on the Brownsville campus in reference to an odor of burnt wire emitting from the hallway. The Brownsville Police Department later arrived on scene, cleared the building and concluded a faulty air conditioner caused the smell. UTRGV Facilities Planning & Operations and Environmental Health Safety & Risk Management were advised of the incident. 

12:34 p.m.: A student reported she was scammed of $1,149. She received a solicitation via her UTRGV email in reference to a job opportunity. She reported making several transactions to an unknown person via third-party money applications. She received a check at her residence for work compensation, but it turned out to be fraudulent. She was referred to the Brownsville Police Department.

12:36 p.m.: A staff member reported losing U.S. currency and a debit card in Lot B-11 on the Brownsville campus. 

3:18 p.m.: A staff member reported losing a university-issued key sometime in 2008. A report was generated for documentation purposes. 

March 12

4:45 a.m.: Officers responded to the Village Apartments on the Edinburg campus in reference to an intoxicated non-affiliated man causing a disturbance at a student’s apartment. Contact was made with the man who exhibited signs of intoxication by alcoholic beverage outside the apartment. Investigation revealed he had damaged his friend’s television, but the student did not press charges. The man was subsequently picked up by his mother, who signed an adult custody release form. The man was issued a criminal trespass warning for all UTRGV properties. 

March 13

5:30 p.m.: A staff member reported losing a university-issued key at the library on the Brownsville campus.  

March 14

12:48 a.m.: An officer responded to the Bursar’s Office on the Brownsville campus in reference to a burglar alarm being accidentally triggered by a UTRGV Facilities Planning & Operations employee. 

12:42 p.m.: An officer on patrol observed a 3-year-old child walking in the middle of Tyler Street in Brownsville. The officer was unsuccessful in locating family members in the area. The Brownsville Police Department was notified and eventually contacted the mother. Brownsville Police is currently conducting an investigation and notified Child Protection Services of the incident. 

March 15

6:26 p.m.: An officer responded to Lot E-38 on the Edinburg campus regarding a student wanting police presence while dropping off personal belongings to his brother’s ex-girlfriend, another student. The male student reported while preparing to return the female’s backpack, he observed narcotics inside. Upon interviewing her, the female said the narcotics were not hers. The backpack was out of her possession for two days prior to being returned. The narcotics were seized and submitted for destruction. 

March 16

11:11 p.m.: A staff member reported accidentally striking a pickup truck near West University Drive while returning to the Edinburg campus from a UT Health clinic. He did not report the accident to the Edinburg Police Department and said the operator of the truck did not report any damages or injuries. The university vehicle sustained damage to the front-left bumper. The staff member did not obtain any additional information from the operator.
