The following are among the incidents reported to University Police between Feb. 15 and 21.
Feb. 15
12:06 p.m.: An officer heard a fire alarm at the library auditorium on the Edinburg campus. A smoke detector had been activated. The Edinburg Fire Department arrived on scene and cleared the building for reentry.
4:56 p.m.: Officers responded to a fire alarm at the Engineering building on the Edinburg campus. A smoke detector had been activated. The Edinburg Fire Department responded to the scene and cleared the building for reentry.
11:15 p.m.: An officer responded to a fire alarm at the Resaca Plaza in Brownsville. The Brownsville Fire Department checked the fire panel, which indicated a trouble signal, and then cleared the building for reentry.
Feb. 16
2:19 p.m.: A student reported his bike was stolen from a rack outside Unity Hall on the Edinburg campus. The case is under investigation.
3:20 p.m.: An officer and the Edinburg Fire Department responded to a fire alarm at Unity Hall on the Edinburg campus. The investigation revealed a water leak from the air handler set off the alarm. The fire department cleared the building for reentry.
8:42 p.m.: A man approached an officer in Lot E-34 on the Edinburg campus for assistance contacting his mother. The man wanted his mother to pick him up. A check on the man revealed an active arrest warrant for assault, a misdemeanor, from Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office. The sheriff’s office did not confirm the warrant due to it being a misdemeanor and COVID-19 procedures at the jail. The man was provided a courtesy transport to his apartment.
Feb. 17
4:42 p.m.: An officer responded to a water leak outside the Resaca Plaza in Brownsville. The leak caused the water to seep into the building. The issue was reported to Facilities.
9:29 p.m.: A faculty member reported receiving several emails from a student in regard to a class assignment. The criminal elements for harassment were not met, and the incident will be referred to Students Rights and Responsibilities for further review.
Feb. 18
7:59 a.m.: An officer met with two individuals in regard to a traffic collision occurring on Schunior street in Edinburg. The vehicles sustained minor damage and no injuries were reported.
Feb. 19
12:45 p.m.: An officer and the Edinburg Fire Department responded to a fire alarm at the UT Health RGV Multispecialty Clinic in Edinburg. The building was deemed safe for reentry. The alarm panel showed a trouble signal.
3:19 p.m.: A faculty member reported she and other faculty members had received numerous emails from a current student about his grades. The elements for harassment were not met. The case will be referred to Student Rights and and Responsibilities for further review and a report was generated for documentation purposes.
5 p.m.: A staff member reported university property described as a voltmeter was missing from the Clinical Education Building on the Harlingen campus. The item was last seen on Feb. 18. The case is under investigation.
9:17 p.m.: An officer responded to assist the U.S. Border Patrol in locating eight individuals in the area of Lot B-1 on the Brownsville campus. Six of the individuals were located and taken into custody by Border Patrol. Three were from Mexico, two were from Honduras and one was from El Salvador.
10:59 p.m.: An officer conducted a traffic stop for a violation in Edinburg. A driver’s license check revealed the driver had an active felony arrest warrant out of the La Paz County Sheriff’s Office in Arizona for obstruction of transportation of narcotics. After the warrant and extradition were confirmed, the driver was arrested and transported to the Hidalgo County Jail. He was issued a written warning for the traffic violation.
Feb. 21
12:57 p.m.: UTRGV Police Communications observed, via U.S. border cameras, two individuals walking on the south side levee behind the Texas Southmost College Scorpion Field. The U.S. Border Patrol detained the two individuals, from Nicaragua, without incident.
7:05 p.m.: An officer observed a parking lot sign had been struck by a vehicle outside the Community Engagement Student Success Building in Edinburg. A work order was sent to have the sign replaced. The case is under investigation.
