The following are among the incidents reported to University Police between Nov. 13 and 27.
Nov. 13
9:21 a.m.: A non-affiliated eBridge employee reported the east exit door was damaged in the eBridge Center for Business and Commercialization building in Brownsville. It is unknown how the damage occurred.
11:42 a.m.: An officer responded to a fire alarm in the Casa Bella apartments on the Brownsville campus. Upon arrival, the officer spoke with a student who reported he had accidentally started a fire while cooking. University Police notified the Brownsville Fire Department and emergency medical services. The student, who sustained minor burns due to the fire, was evaluated and declined transport to a hospital.
11:57 a.m.: An officer met with a student who reported that an unknown man was possibly taking photos of her and her friend near the Main Building on the Brownsville campus.
2:40 p.m.: University Police received a report of a possible odor of marijuana coming from a storage room in Performing Arts Complex A on the Edinburg campus. An officer checked the area and discovered no evidence of drug activity.
3:47 p.m.: An officer was waved down by a non-affiliated man regarding two dogs that were trapped and in distress inside a resaca across the Texas Southmost College Recreation Center in Brownsville. The officer rescued the two dogs.
5:02 p.m.: University Police received a report of a ceiling tile that had fallen due to a water leak in the Music, Science and Learning Center on the Brownsville campus. UTRGV Facilities staff arrived and repaired the issue.
Nov. 14
7:02 a.m.: University Police and the Edinburg Fire Department responded to a fire alarm in Troxel Hall on the Edinburg campus. Upon arrival, it was determined that a portable stove burner inside a dormitory was emitting smoke and set off the smoke detector. The building was cleared for reentry.
Nov. 15
2:40 p.m.: University Police received a report of a non-affiliated patient who caused a disturbance with a physician in the Behavioral Health Clinic in Harlingen. An officer responded to the location and found that the patient had left the area. The officer contacted the patient and issued them a criminal trespass warning for all UTRGV properties at the request of the physician.
4:49 p.m.: A student reported she was startled by two wild javelinas on the Lozano-Banco Bridge near the Main Building on the Brownsville campus. No injuries were reported. Officers checked the area but did not locate the wild javelinas.
Nov. 16
12:38 p.m.: A student reported being shocked after attempting to use an electrical socket in Liberal Arts Building South on the Edinburg campus. Emergency medical services arrived and evaluated the student who declined services. A work order was submitted for repairs.
5:06 p.m.: An officer met with a student employee who reported feeling unsafe on campus due to a statement from her estranged ex-husband, who is also a student. The case is under investigation.
Nov. 17
1:24 p.m.: An employee reported that an unknown individual gained unlawful entry into her vehicle and stole her parking permit while it was parked in Lot B-4 on the Brownsville campus. The case is under investigation.
Nov. 18
8:08 a.m.: An officer observed markings in permanent marker on a cement column while patrolling the first floor of the Engineering Building on the Edinburg campus. A work order was submitted to have the markings removed. The case is under investigation.
Nov. 19
3:19 p.m.: A student reported she had a protective order against her estranged husband, a UTRGV student, who was attending the same function at the Texas Southmost College Performing Arts Center in Brownsville. An officer was not able to confirm the protective order. The officer ensured that both individuals refrained from contacting each other throughout the event.
Nov. 20
10:25 a.m.: University Police and the Edinburg Fire Department responded to a fire alarm in Troxel Hall on the Edinburg campus. Upon arrival, it was determined that dust particles in the smoke detector triggered the alarm. The building was cleared for reentry.
3:59 p.m.: A student on the Edinburg campus reported he had been assaulted by his girlfriend, who is also a UTRGV student, at an off-campus location on Nov. 19. The case is under investigation.
9:10 p.m.: Officers responded to Lot B-1 to assist U.S. Border Patrol after six individuals were observed crossing the fence via closed-circuit TV cameras. Officers checked the area but did not locate the individuals.
Nov. 21
12:19 p.m.: A University Bookstore employee reported observing an unidentified woman through closed-circuit TV cameras who walked into the bookstore on the Edinburg campus on two occasions and placed items into her purse and left without paying. The case is under investigation.
Nov. 22
12:30 p.m.: University Police received a report of a woman who was seen stealing items from the University Bookstore on the Edinburg campus. An officer responded to the location but upon arrival, the woman had already left.
12:39 p.m.: A student on the Edinburg campus reported she was assaulted by her boyfriend, who is a UTRGV student, Nov. 21 at an off-campus location. The case is under investigation.
Nov. 27
10:34 a.m.: University Police identified and apprehended a student who had been seen stealing on various occasions from the University Bookstore on the Edinburg campus. The bookstore staff claimed that the student stole various food items on several occasions, according to Assistant Chief of Police Van Slusser. Witness statements supported the allegation of theft, and management requested the student to be issued a criminal trespass warning and a citation for theft. The case is connected to those reported on Nov. 21 and 22.
3:49 p.m.: A Parking and Transportation employee found a vehicle with a copied UTRGV parking permit in Lot E-34 on the Edinburg campus. The incident is under investigation.
